Since 1940, Hana Hou Restaurant has offered delicious homemade comfort food and dessert that you can’t find anywhere else! Signature dishes cooked with local Ka’u beef and fresh fish caught locally for the deep waters of the Big Island. Stop by today! Under new owners since October 1st 2024. The new owners are from Lahaina, Maui and brought their knowledge of food and beverage to Naalehu, HI. The new hours of operations allow locals and visitors to come and enjoy a local family style meal.

Awesome food, nice atmosphere, great service!
A local recommended this place. It is a little hidden away so not as noticeable as the bakery (across the street).
They have a great selection of desserts but we didn’t have room to try any. Seated immediately. Friendly and attentive staff. Inside and outside seating.
The smash burger was excellent! Cooked perfectly. Great sauce and fried onion. French fried were nice and crispy. Will have to come back and try other menu options.

Once we escaped the orbit of the resorts on the west side of the island, the food became more delicious and made with love. That was the case with Hana Hou. After a long hike at the volcano and some beach time, we stopped by for lilikoi lemonades, hot sandwiches, and a loco moco. It really hit the spot. The food had soul and old-time Hawaiian charm, with portions that made you feel like ohana. I would recommend going out of your way to have a taste!

Sam was our server and she was fabulous! She was very kind and made us welcome from the moment we sat down. I got the loco moco and my partner got the sunday loser. They were both phenomenal! A bit pricey for us but definitely worth it since most everything was local. Great place to fill your belly and if we weren’t leaving we would definitely Hana Hou!

This restaurant was well located right after going to the green sand beach long hike under the sun. I loved all the decors inside and the outdoor space was very cute. We had great service from our waitress and I also love that they have live music on the weekends.

Very popular restaurant that bills itself as the southern most in the United States. The food is very good and is local sourced, a sign on the wall tells you the name of the ranch where your hamburger meat came from and another sign lists the name of the angler who caught the fish you are eating. My hamburger was a little salty for my tastes , the fries were good and plentiful, my wife’s fish was very good, the coleslaw that came with it (well there are styles of coleslaw i like better.) But overall the food was excellent.

This time was different! This place has changed alot, and it is awesome! The food is great! The atmosphere is awesome and the service is wonderful!!! Supper Friendly! Usually when you’re this far away from a major town, you put up with it and you just get what you get! But these guys are awesome!! iI you’ve stopped here before, and you haven’t been here for a while, Try it again. I’m pretty sure you’ll like it. Aloha.

I am very impressed every time I eat here. Nicest restaurant in the area – southernmost restaurant in the USA! And quite an experience with a very complete menu, featuring the freshest locally caught fish (fisherman’s name on the board – see the photo), as well as a decent selection of wines, and a delectable dessert counter. Also doubles as a pizzeria! You really can’t go wrong here, something for everyone, plus fried calamari. Despite being full, sufficiently busy to say the least (you would never know based on the gap I caught in my photo), there was no wait or delay, in seating, service, or for our meals. Extremely friendly staff. All-around very fulfilling and relaxing experience – great way to end a beach day.

Love the place . The southernmost restaurant in the entire United States . I get family vibes when I’m there . Food was excellent! It’s conveniently located in between Papakolea green sand beach and Punalu’u Black sand beach making it the perfect stop for lunch in between on your excursion . Tammy our server was awesome ! I recommend the smash burger or the ahi yakitori and the macadamia pie for desert . They had a refreshing drink made with unsweetened tea and local lilikoi (passion fruit)

We as a family were on our way to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, dropped into the Hana Hou Restaurant for Lunch on a week day. The Restaurant menu included Burgers, Sandwiches, Pizzas, Rice plates, Noodles, Salads, Drinks and Deserts. We opted for a Burger, Local Saimin, Butter Garlic Lemon Shrimp with Rice and Mac Salad. Tasty food but slightly priced on the higher side compared to competition. The Restaurant is true to its tag line “Authentic Island Flavour and Heartfelt Hospitality.”USP: Restaurant serves fresh catch of the local fisherman., Burgers and Sandwiches made from grass-fed beef and Freshly baked deserts. A good dining option when at Naalehu in Big Island, Hawaii.
