Don’t skip on: The Rose Tteobokki with cheese
This place was so good!! Located inside the main Chinatown building, Halgatteok offers the classic street food – Tteobokki! These rice cakes covered in sauce and cheese are so delicious and addictive. We got a sampling outside of the store from Sergio and it was love at first bite! When we decided to go order a full entree, Sergio took the time to walk us through how the menu works (there were 4 steps with several options) and also told us exactly what we just tasted if we wanted to order that same dish again. I’ve never had that happen before and didn’t know that level of customer service even existed! Huge shout out to him!
We liked the sample so much that we ended up getting exactly that – the Rose Tteobokki, Ssal Teok, Level 1 with cheese. Get it – you won’t regret it.
While we did a takeout order, we sat down while we waited for our order to be prepared. The wait wasn’t long at all, but there is one – of you’re in about hurry, order it before, and then do your shopping and it will be ready by the time you get back. The store was clean and well kept – green check marks in books!
Can’t wait to go back and try the other options they had!
however i was offered a sample of a ssaltteok with the rosé sauce and it was divine!
so the last time i went i ordered the rosé sauce tteokpokki. it is so delicious and creamy. the bacon in the sauce gives a slight smokey flavor and the sausages that come with it are super flavorful while not too spicy. i like extra vegetables in mine and i also highly recommend adding noodles and melted cheese onto your tteokpokki
The servers weren’t allowing us to sit where it would be best for us, the new chairs are much to bulky that no one had any seats in the middle as they hit the person behind you, the other chairs were much nicer as we were able to put our bags away if we had any on us or our coats. We never got refills for our drinks as well.
The food, we usually get at the self-service bar appeared that there were low on ingredients. Not a lot of rice cakes as well as what was there. The rice cakes given in the order were low even with what we added. We did enjoy the taste, but with everything else going on we just weren’t able to enjoy it.
I hope it was just a bad day, but I’ve gone over some of the reviews here already and it seems it’s been on the decline. Please, I know you guys can get better. I and many others would hate if you guys were to change further or close due to this.
Food: Tried the Grandma Tteokbokki, Gimmari Fried Seaweed Roll, Multteok Fish Cake Soup, and a rice ball. The food was delicious and filling, easily satisfying two adults.
The Grandma Tteokbokki was a standout, with a perfectly balanced spicy sauce and flavorful ingredients. The tteokbokki rice cakes are typically cylindrical and chewy. It’s definitely a generous dish because of the amount of carbs that are served. For anyone wanting to pop in and try a few money items, this is definitely a dish that can be shared with a few people.
The Gimmari Fried Seaweed Roll was crispy and flavorful. Probably my favorite among what I tasted. The fish cake soup was surprisingly hearty and comforting – it was incredibly savory. A very light yet complex combination of all flavor profiles, it would honestly stand well on its own as just a broth. That’s how delicious I think it is. The rice ball was a fun and unique experience, served with gloves for a hands-on approach. But the rice itself was incredibly seasoned and excited to go try it again.
Service:
The staff was very attentive and friendly. They seated us immediately and took our orders promptly. They were also very knowledgeable about the menu and made helpful suggestions.
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere was fun and inviting. There’s cool decor including an awesome SLC Skyline art piece in their back wall . It has a bright interior with incandescent and LED lighting. Which in my mind lends it to be more of a daytime or after work casual spot.
Price:
The prices were reasonable for the quality of food. I spent about $20 per person, which I thought was a good value for the amount of food we received.
Recommendations:
I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a casual and enjoyable dining experience. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is inviting, and the service is excellent. My verdict is this place is worth trying once – I’m personally going to go and check out more food menu items!
Overall:
Halgayteok is a hidden gem in Chinatown that offers authentic Korean cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a fan of tteokbokki or simply looking for a delicious and satisfying meal, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit.
