I’m embarrassed to admit that although I live not far away from Halcyon, I’ve never been here before. We went for brunch on a Saturday and sat at the bar. The drinks (especially the “Pearanormal”) were spot on. We tried the oysters, which were also perfect. The Steak & Eggs Au Poivre (Filet Mignon, Smashed Potatoes, Fried Egg) was absolutely delicious and filling. We will definitely be back, for sure! Definitely worth a try if you haven’t been here yet.

2/6/2026 Update: Went back to Halcyon, this time for dinner. We got the Rainbow Roll ($20) as an appetizer (Tuna, Salmon, Avocado, Mango, Soy Paper Wrapped, Miso Honey) which was good, solid, but not exceptional. For dinner we tried the White Miso Soy Scottish Salmon ($38 — included Mushrooms, Baby Bok Choy, Sushi Rice, Toasted Sesame, Tobiko), which was very good and highly recommended, and the Filet Mignon Au Poivre ($54 with Smashed Potatoes, Grilled Asparagus) which was also very good. So this was another very positive experience, which warrants more future visits.

Happy hour at Halcyon Montclair is truly exceptional. Their espresso martinis are the best I’ve had anywhere and the small plates are refined and flavorful. The space is sophisticated and stylish, making it the perfect after-work escape.

I was really excited to visit this place because I had seen it all over TikTok, but my experience was very disappointing starting with the service. We arrived earlier than our 3:15 reservation and were told by the hostess that we could still have brunch, but she seemed flustered and seated us very quickly and walked away without much warmth.

I didn’t like the seat she gave us, so I asked for another. She went to the back looking visibly annoyed while we stood there waiting, which left a bad first impression.

Our waiter seemed cool at first, but when our food came, I needed salt and pepper for my toast and he was nowhere to be found for a long time. He wasn’t very warm but he was ok.

We waited a long time and eventually I had to get up, find him myself, and ask for the seasonings. Even though it was the end of brunch and the restaurant wasn’t full, our entrées took about 30 minutes to arrive.

We ordered chicken and waffles and avocado toast, and while they were transitioning to the dinner menu, the long delay was disappointing.

For appetizers we ordered a Caesar salad and calamari. The Caesar salad portion was very small for the price and the calamari was just okay but it arrived cold with no heat at all. We ate it anyway, but it wasn’t worth it.

My avocado toast was fine. I asked for balsamic reduction and pickled onions, which they added, but the avocado itself still needed salt and pepper.

The chicken and waffles were the biggest disappointment. The waffle batter was bland and 1 was left uneaten, while the chicken was covered in sweet chili sauce (which it didn’t say on the menu) that made the whole dish overly sweet and hard for him to eat.

The atmosphere was nice with good music and a chill vibe. Overall, we left underwhelmed. I’m giving it a 3.

I attended a business event and got in a little early. The space was quiet, comfortable and set up really well, which made it easy to settle in before things got started. It felt professional without being stuffy and worked perfectly for a business gathering. Would definitely recommend Halcyon for this type of event.

Went for a birthday dinner. The food was tasty. I had the 16oz pork chop which was served with Broccolini and mashed potatoes. Even though it was a big pork chop, it eas still very tender. I had the “colossal” crab cake as my appetizer. It was nowhere close to colossal but still tasted ok. Other people had the halibut on a bed of bokchoy. For dessert we ordered the flourless chocolate cake, the creme brulee and the profiteroles. The flourless cake was yummy, almost tasted like a lava cake. It came with vanilla ice cream.
I would recommend for a romantic date or a nice quite meal. Nice ambience and good service.

I was pleased to learn that Halcyon has expanded to lunch service, both for dining in and takeout. This restaurant has long been a favorite of mine and this makes it even more convenient. Our office now orders from them for our weekly luncheon and it’s been a great addition to the rotation.

Stopped in for lunch on Thursday and really enjoyed it. The food was fresh and well made, the service was friendly and the space felt comfortable without being stuffy. Great option in Montclair when you want a nice lunch that still feels easy and relaxed. Would definitely come back.

What’s not to say about this place. If you’re a fan of seafood you won’t be disappointed in the fresh and delicious options available. Nothing here is lacking in flavor and the cocktails are outstanding. Came here with a few girlfriends and we had a pleasant time. The atmosphere would lend itself to a beautiful date night location. There is a private venue upstairs if you’d like to host an event there and is conveniently connected to Egan and Sons if you wanted to have a relaxed drink after an upscale dinner. If you park in the lot in the back, at Egans, you can walk straight through to Halcyon. Make a res of you’re going on a peak night. Can’t wait to go back.
