The Kumamoto oysters here are always served fresh and delicious. When it comes to either the entrees or sushi, it’s top notch quality and delicious! They always have specials going on and we highly recommend giving those dishes a try.
Our favorite dishes at Hakumaru are: Kumamoto Oysters, Gyudon, Negitoro Don, The 4S Specialty Roll, and all nigiri options.
The service is also great; we’ve never had a reservation and they always try to fit us in but we definitely recommend placing a reservation if you don’t want to risk it. Lastly, you got to try the Matcha Brownie; IYKYK!
The food:
Do not skip dessert. The Earl Grey Crème Brûlée and Matcha Brownie ($8.95) were the stars of the show. They delivered subtle, refined tea flavors.
Sashimi Champloo: A vibrant plate showcasing the chef’s selection of fresh fish. The quality and freshness were immediately apparent.
Gyudon Rice Bowl: Topped with tender, well-seasoned short rib slices and sautéed mushrooms and onions, it was a comforting, savory dish.
Operations:
• Kitchen Pacing: We noticed a timing gap during our visit. Cold dishes (sashimi) came out much faster than the hot dishes, which had a backlog. Tip: If you are on a tight schedule or eating in a group, ask the staff about the wait time for hot food.
• Parking: Convenient parking is available on-site, making access easy.
• Service: Warm, friendly, and accommodating.
Overall:
A quality eatery to host a refined meal for a small family or business outing.
I love the vibe they have here as it reminds me of a more modern izakaya restaurant you’d find in Japan.
The food is absolutely top notch and reasonably priced for the quality and the service is overall solid.
They have specials on the wall (to the left when you first walk in) that change on a regular basis and it’s always a delight dining here!
Highly recommend this spot for Japanese food
Our visit didn’t start great. The place was packed, and even though we arrived early, the host didn’t take our name—he just said they were cleaning a few tables. We waited, but people who came in after us were added to the list and seated before us. Obviously, we weren’t happy. Once we brought it up to the staff, though, they fixed it right away. Erwin really stepped in to make things right, and we appreciated his effort.
To kick things off, we ordered a local draft Asahi and an orange cream soda for the kids. For appetizers, we had shishito peppers, seaweed salad, and chicken karaage. The karaage and its dipping sauce were delicious. The shishito peppers were soaked in a sukiyaki-style sauce—so good and not spicy at all. Plus, the bonito flakes on top started moving from the heat (check my videos!). The seaweed salad was a little too sweet for our taste.
For rolls, we followed the staff’s recommendations and ordered:
Salmon Dac Biet (krab, shrimp tempura, avocado, salmon, fried leeks/serrano, coconut milk, eel sauce, habanero oil) – This was melting in our mouth, best Sushi we ever had.
Rainbow Roll (krab, avocado, cucumber, assorted fish)
Maru Maru (krab, shrimp tempura, avocado) – Very simple and tasty
California Roll – Never go wrong for my little one
For dessert, we had the matcha brownie with miso caramel, powdered sugar, and vanilla ice cream. This was hands down the best thing we tried. The brownie was firm on the bottom and soft on top—perfect with the vanilla ice cream.
At the end we got Matcha chocolate as compliment, it was Yumm.
The restaurant itself is pretty small for the amount of people they get, and it’s definitely on the pricier side. But overall, once the rocky start was sorted out, we had a really good experience.
Food was great – the hamachi carpaccio was lovely. Enjoyed the spicy garlic edamame and gyoza. Chicken curry was also good, chicken was quite tender.
They have a wonderful later happy hour (7:30-9pm) from Monday to Thursday. Which is different from most restaurants where IMO it’s absurdly early (3-5).
Look forward to another visit to try other menu items and that earl grey crème brûle a lot of people seem to post about!
