She coached us on what and how much to order and encouraged us that we could order as we wanted as the meal continued. The meats were well seasoned, and the sides were ordered were all delicious! Our favorites were top sirloin, rib eye roll, hanger steak, brisket and boneless short ribs. We also loved the gyoza, karage, and edamame.
I had told Emily it was my grandson’s birthday, and she made sure that our evening ended in a celebration with a lit up cake, and mochi!
It was a great time and I highly recommend!
On 2/9, my actual birthday, I dined there with my brother. The manager at the hostess stand informed me that for parties of four or more, the birthday guest eats free as part of their all-you-can-eat promotion. I was told very clearly that I had up to two weeks from my birthday to redeem the offer. Because I enjoyed my experience that day so much, I made plans to return within that timeframe with the required number of guests.
On 2/21, I returned with a party of four, followed the instructions given to me, and informed our server that it was my birthday celebration. He acknowledged the promotion and stated he would simply need to check my ID after we finished dining. At no point prior to us eating was there any mention of a “7-day before and 7-day after” rule. This restriction is not listed on the advertisement, not on the menu, and was never communicated to me previously.
After we finished our meal is when everything went completely left. The server returned and informed us that the manager on duty would not honor the promotion because it was supposedly limited to 7 days after the birthday. The manager struggled to communicate clearly and insisted this was the rule. I explained that I was told two weeks by prior management and that I returned specifically within that timeframe, bringing the required number of guests. I simply asked that they honor what I had been told.
Instead of resolving the issue professionally, I was handed a phone to speak to the owner, Andy. The conversation was shocking. He was rude, condescending, and argumentative. I was told I had “misheard,” that they would not change rules “for me,” and was even threatened with police involvement if I did not pay the bill. Being spoken to in that manner, in front of my guests, over a promotion that was not clearly advertised, was humiliating and deeply upsetting.
After nearly 30 minutes of back-and-forth, the manager ultimately applied the discount anyway. Even with the birthday special applied, our bill still came to nearly $230 before tip, as we ordered multiple rounds of drinks in addition to the $39.90 per person all-you-can-eat. This entire confrontation was over approximately $40.
The food at Gyuzo is good. However, management’s handling of this situation overshadowed everything. I was made to feel dishonest for simply following the instructions given to me. What was meant to be a joyful 30th birthday celebration turned into an argument and public embarrassment. There was no dessert celebration, no acknowledgment, just tension and frustration.
As someone who has worked in hospitality, I understand policies matter. But so does accountability, clarity in advertising, and basic respect when resolving misunderstandings. This situation was mishandled from start to finish.
It is extremely disappointing to support a business from its early days, return within the timeframe given by management, and be treated in such a dismissive and hostile manner. After this terrible experience, I will never return to patronize this establishment ever again.
