This is a really small spot that’s pretty much only there for takeout – I almost walked directly past when looking for it. They really advertise their Area 206 curry, which I thought was a Tamari Bar thing, but I guess they do it too.

I had the pork donburi bowl – but the mini version. This is a combination of pork katsu with their curry, over a bed of rice.
The pork was not great. It was dry as a bone and pretty tough as well; certainly seemed to be way overcooked. The breading was ok, it at least stuck to the pork, but no real crispness from its texture. At least the pieces were somewhat large.

The amount of the ‘famed’ curry present was really disappointing. Despite decent-sized portions of meat and rice, there really wasn’t that much of the curry in the bowl. This left the overall meal feeling pretty dry after i’d mixed in the curry with all the rice. This lack of liquidity was due to the low volume of curry.
The rice was fine – good enough

What prevents this from being rated quite low was the portion size was very good for the price. I got about 360g of the dish, about a third of that being pork. Since the mini version of the donburi bowl is under $10, that means it’s a pretty satisfying lunch for that price, which is extremely rare to find in this area of Seattle. It’s impressive that they offer mini versions of their normal bowls – something I don’t see often.

Overall, it’s a good value, but that can’t save it from the mediocre food. 5/10

I was visiting Seattle to see some friends and in the interim of wandering this beautiful city alone, I hungrily stumbled upon Gyo Gyo En. The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming, warmly saying hello as soon as I entered and making me feel like I was right at home. Answered any questions I had kindly and served the food very quickly. I got the JFC Curry Katsu and it was AMAZING! I have been to Japan before and also live in an area in the east coast that is well known for their Japanese food and was pleasantly surprised that Seattle performed just as well. I wish I lived nearby so I could have this regularly! A word of caution if you don’t like spicy food, ask for no hot sauce topped on the curry. I love spice and was pleasantly surprised. 🙂 I hope this establishment is here when I visit next year!

Tried the premium bara-chirashi bento, the Japanese fried chicken curry, and the hotate creamy butter corn ramen.

Ramen – was decent, had 3 sizable pieces of scallop. Creamy flavor was good but noodles were a bit thin for my taste. Would have liked more other non-meat toppings. 3/5

Japanese Fried Chicken Curry – the tastiest of the three! Chicken was meaty and the rice and curry combo was satisfying. They could have been much more generous with the portions though, especially the chicken. 4/5

Premium chirashi – tbh, this was the most disappointing. Only half of the fish that they show in the menu photo, and only 3 pieces of uni and half (!!!) a scallop. For the price I would expect to get what’s in the menu/online photo at least? The tuna was also dry and low quality. The only good thing in here was the sweet shrimp, which was admittedly very tasty. 1.5/5

Overall, not the best, especially given the prices. Quantities are fairly small (I legit ate all 3 in one sitting alone). Service was very nice.

Unfortunately out of principle, I’ll have to round down of the misleading chirashi photos. 2/5 stars.

Very small restaurant that was rather hard to find. It was a cold and rainy day in Seattle so I wanted something to warm me up. I ordered the Gyo Gyo Ramen with a tofu substitution and it was just alright. I wish they had included an egg and maybe some fishcake. There just wasn’t much flavor to the soup. Most people just don’t pick up here as they have limited space.

Small cozy Japanese style restaurant. Had their curry with soft egg added. Nice affordable place and not too much food. Lovely staff.

Personally my favorite poke place by far. The sauce they use is good without being overpowering. Additionally, the fish has been consistently fresh and not “fishy.” I usually order the half pound of poke with a side of rice since I like to just enjoy the essentials. With the fish and rice both being so fresh, this is my favorite way to enjoy it.

There’s really no seating since the shop is so small so takeout is probably better.

Delicious curry served up by a friendly staff in a cool izakaya-like environment! Their curry is distinctly flavorful.

I ordered “5 kinds sashimi”: the salmon, hamachi, and scallops were okay. I did not enjoy the tuna, which was cold in the center and flavorless. The service was friendly and the decor was fun though! I appreciated the cool interior and shaded seats after a hot walk in the city. I would order something different next time, perhaps curry or the poke.

Fun and cozy restaurant interior. Food was delicious and everything tasted homemade. Slightly higher pricing but worth every penny. Creamy salmon and tuna in the poke. The curry tasted like one I had in Okinawa.
