I FOUND BREAKFAST FRIED POTATOES AT GUS’S!
Folks I’ve been trying to find a decent American breakfast since I moved to San Diego in 2010. I have routinely been disappointed with the fried potatoes.
Today I discovered that you can order the home fries here and you can simply ask them to remove the onions or the Bell peppers. Which I did with the onions in this photo. I also could have asked for them to be well done.
I highly recommend this place for breakfast. It seems to have a handful of locals in here on a Friday morning.
Wait staff is friendly and very competent and I found it to be very clean. The food was served hot the beverages were served cold what else can you ask for?

Super disappointed. The place and staff were nice but the food was an absolute disaster. The burger buns was literally wet. The fries looked nice but tasted 2 days old, soggy, like rubber and they had zero seasoning. No salt, no pepper, nothing on the fries. Maybe an off day but none of us could finish the food we ordered.

The all-day specials advertised on the sign are misleading. When trying to order them after 2pm, staff refused, even after checking the sign outside and acknowledging it said all-day specials. The way it was handled felt dismissive and patronizing.. definitely frustrating for anyone expecting what’s advertised.

I was craving a good sandwich and decided to try this spot out after seeing some pictures online. I am glad I did! I ordered the footlong philly cheeesesteak sandwich with fries. Wow, this is a great combination of quality and quantity. There was plenty of meat, cheese, onions, and mushrooms. The bun was perfectly toasted as well. You will not leave hungry! Gus’s has plenty of seating, and there is ample parking. The lady at the counter was very friendly and the restaurant feels like a cozy diner. I will be back for some more sandwich or pizza deliciousness. This is a hidden gem if you are not familiar with the area. Eat up!!

Gus’s how I love you! I thought you were lost forever when you closed on Rosecrans in Point Loma. Then I find out 10 years later you had a SECOND location in La Mesa?!? I flew all the way from Texas just for your pastrami sandwich when I found out! And you did not disappoint. You even brought the cook from the Point Loma location and the taste has not changed. The pastrami is so good, melts in your mouth good. Mozzarella cheese completely mixed through the stack of pastrami. The bread, mozzarella, pastrami, and mustard give it this great sweet and salty crunch that is unmatched! All time favorite pastrami sandwich in the world! I’d steal from my dead grandma just to eat that sandwich. Zero complaints zero negative comments. Gorgeous street views chill atmosphere service is out of this world. The best and most friendliest staff ever! Gus’s is the place to be for authentic SD food! The pizza is pretty great too.

Hidden Gem in La mesa one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I have had and definitely the biggest this thing was HUGE I mean HUGE they definitely dont skimp on the food the meat was delicious perfect seasoning great cheese ratio I got the 12 inch and it would definitely feed two people the French fries were good service was outstanding plenty of parking definitely should try this place this was my first time here next time I will try the pastrami sandwich

I got the pastrami and man the bread is huge the pastrami perfect. My partner got the sausage sandwich and my other friends split a 12 inch turkey avocado sandwich but then only could eat half because it was so big. Also pictured is the club sandwich the guy who didn’t want to come got, looks pretty amazing in my opinion. Would highly reccomend if you’re in the area. Ps the guy up front was so nice didn’t get his name

Service: The Service here is hit or miss which is unfortunate. I Went twice for take out within a week with two different person taking my order. First visit was not welcoming and just more of a this is what you order and here is your total. Second visit the gentleman was very welcoming and friendly.
Food: The Gus Philly Cheesesteak is by far the best all around. I haven’t found a place as comparable yet. Also tried the Chicken Philly for a friend that doesn’t eat red meat and she LOVED it.
Military Discount: They used to support military with a 10% discount, but unfortunately not anymore.
