I was here yesterday with my mom between 12:30 and 1 for the first time since Gump passed a couple years ago. We were the only two in there for that period of time, and our food took 30 minutes to come out. All of the food was pulled out of the fridge cold and had to be warmed up on the grill. I don’t know if the man working had just packed up for the day early, but the hours are until 2 PM, so a 30 minute wait seemed egregious.
Additionally, most recipes seemed to have changed since Gump’s passing. The cheesy potatoes just tasted like there was nacho cheese poured over hashbrowns, and the baked beans looked and tasted like a can of Bush’s baked beans. Overall, our food was disappointing in comparison to Gump’s original recipes and made us feel like the new owners are not honoring his business he poured his heart and time into. There isn’t even anything in the store about the history of Gump’s or anything to honor his legacy.
The one gentleman who was working was very respectful, however he had his headphones on the whole time he was serving us, which made him seem closed off and took away from the vibe of the place that used to exist. If you were to walk into Gump’s before his passing, you were greeted and conversed with by a bubbly and upbeat Gump, and you would find the place packed with police officers, Michigan State student athletes, and the greater Lansing community during breakfast and lunch hours. He loved his customers. It is now obvious that business is slower, possibly because of the food or the customer service.
Our experience left us with one conclusion: if you’re going to change everything about the place, change the name. As close friends of Gump for over 20 years, it’s sad to see his business not fulfilling the vision he had for the place. At least put a picture of him up. But what do I know…

I came to Gumps a few months ago for a breakfast burrito. Recently I started working at a new location and remembered this place! The portions are PLENTY! It’s a small owned business and they’re so friendly!! I take one bite and I feel like I’m at a family bbq event over the summer. Seriously SOO good.

Ok, I’m not shy to spend good money on good food, they have prices comparable if not more than other spots … this is trash. Waited 45 mins to see them cut up cold very thin Brisket and toss it on the flat top under a lid with water I should have walked out. I guess today I only get one side with my meal, I was at least hoping that the sides were good but nope. I don’t like writing reviews like this but don’t waste your money. Consider yourself warned I’m out $26. Hopefully the dog will eat it. Disgraceful.

We’ve been here a couple times. The first time was a few weeks ago, and my daughter still talks about her burrito! She said it was legit! I have had the nachos and the brisket bowl, and both were amazing! The portions were large, enough to share. Very laid back place and the owner/cook is very nice with a smile. Its a small place, and was clean both times we’ve stopped in. Nice spot to grab lunch. Thanks for the great food!

Gump’s BBQ is always a good choice. I have never had anything there that wasn’t amazing. The pulled pork is juicy and flavorful, the sauce is delicious.

Change the name…I didn’t know Gump passed but after getting my food today after coming back to town I knew something was off. And yes at least put a picture of the guy up maybe it will spark something.
