I was surprisingly disappointed. The place is named the gumbo shop and the gumbo was very bland and flavorless. The bread that they just sat on paper seemed a bit disrespectful. No plate, no butter, no oils, no basket no decor or presentation. The place was super crammed and crowded. We had to wait a long time to be seated at this restaurant. there may have been 8 of us total. It was so crowded that when the servers walked by they would sometimes bump the back of you or your chair. A very small space to dine and I was not pleased with any of the food. It was all mediocre at best. The hospitality wasn’t great either and the prices were expensive for the small dishes that we decided to try. This was during my 1st trip to New Orleans for a family reunion on my daughter’s in-laws side of the family. I wish I could brag and tell you something good about this shop but, I cannot and I do not recommend.. Sorry gumbo shop. I won’t be back there’s a lot more gumbos in NOLA that make you want more. When you know you know!!!

Upon learning that they were voted to have the “best gumbo” in NOLA, I’m a little bit disappointed with myself for having ordered something else BESIDES gumbo. Yes, I’ve been told numerous times that their creole combination was worth trying and a must order. But that’s not what they were voted best for…so I’ll just have to stop by again before I fly back out.

I really like the old world vibes here. The patio area looks and feels very European. Inside, I felt ported back to a bygone era and just sitting there lets me experience a part of history. Service was quite friendly and very straightforward. Food and drinks came very quickly (I also did visit at a relatively slow period).

As much as the dish was recommended, I really didn’t think much of the creole combo. It felt simple for what NOLA is known for. It didn’t excite like what would be expected of creole/cajun flavors. If anything, it was leaning towards the boring side. Too bad I had a few others things to get done that day or I would have ordered a few more items to properly gauge their food and flavors.

Until next time, thank you and see you again soon!

Gumbo Shop is one of the most popular and historic restaurants in New Orleans for authentic Creole cuisine. They are known for their classic seafood okra gumbo, creole combination platter, and bread pudding.

My wife and I are visiting from San Diego and the Gumbo Shop serves one of the best gumbo we’ve ever had. I didn’t get our waiters name but he was very attentive and personable. He recommended something that wasn’t on the menu and I went with his recommendation. It turned out to be very good in flavor.

They offer a spacious dining area, both indoor and outdoor. They also have a full bar and serve a great variety of cocktails and beers.

I recommend the Gumbo Shop if you’re looking for great gumbo. Many other entrees sounded so good and I wish I could have tried more options.

It’s a good place to try a bite of every NOLA cuisine. The seasoning is good – not too salty and shows the real flavor of the food itself. My fav is the crawfish étouffée. The warm pudding with whiskey sauce is also surprisingly lovely.

Food is served very quickly

This was a classic New Orleans experience! I do wish the portions on the gumbo were larger; it would be great if they offered a smaller bowl and a larger bowl option. For how reasonable the prices were, I expected the bowl might be a smaller portion for that price, but I didn’t see a way around that. I tried the chicken andouille gumbo and it was really tasty! It was a cold day and we enjoyed ordering the hot apple cider as a nice treat.

Of course i had to try Gumbo while i was in New Orleans. So when i asked chatgpt (yes, i did…) where i should go, this place came up as award winning! I went for an early dinner, a friday around 6, and i was sat right away. There’s construction in the area so you have to pay attention to where you are going or you won’t find them. Its a very casual place, ambiance was great and they have outdoor seating as well. Staff is very pleasant and very helpful. I started with a piña colada, which was very tasty, not too sweet or too icey. I had the seafood & okra gumbo! It was amazing. I added some hot sauce to it. They bring you french bread, which was perfect for dipping in my gumbo!!! You must come here and try it out! They have several gumbo options to pick from.

I’ve tried a lot of gumbos around New Orleans. This is the real deal.

I ordered the gumbo trio (off-menu if you ask) so I could sample three different styles in one sitting. Smart move. Each one had a deep, rich roux and layered seasoning that only comes from doing it right. You can taste the time in it. Nothing thin, slimy or rushed. Just authentic Creole flavor.

It was a little tricky to get to because of street construction in the area, but once you’re inside, it’s worth it. The space feels classic French Quarter, historic, energetic and focused on the food.

If gumbo matters to you and you want the real thing, make the effort. This spot delivers.

My boyfriend and I came for lunch earlier this week on a day trip to New Orleans. This was my first time dining here, and everything was excellent! We loved the warm bread and I had a duck and andouille sausage soup that was fantastic. Our waitress Gabby also gave exemplary service and made the experience 10/10! We will be back soon!

Our visit to The Gumbo Shop was nothing short of outstanding. Tucked in the heart of the French Quarter, this charming and historic restaurant embodies everything you hope for in a New Orleans dining experience—rich flavors, welcoming service, and a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

We began with the Chicken Andouille Gumbo, which immediately lived up to its reputation as the best gumbo in the city—and the Vernon family agrees! The combination of tender boneless chicken, smoky Cajun andouille sausage, okra, and perfectly balanced seasonings simmered in a flavorful chicken stock was pure comfort in a bowl. It’s the dish that reminds you why gumbo is the soul of New Orleans cooking.

For entrées, we savored several dishes that showcased the kitchen’s mastery of Creole cuisine. The Redfish with Shrimp Creole Sauce, recommended by our exceptional server, did not disappoint—ya heard me! The redfish was tender and perfectly cooked, topped with a rich, spicy shrimp Creole sauce that packed both depth and flavor. It was paired with Jambalaya, loaded with smoked sausage, shrimp, and chicken—each bite seasoned to perfection and bursting with authentic Creole character.

The Complete Creole Dinner was another standout. The Chicken Espagnole, half a chicken broiled and simmered in a savory brown sauce with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, and wine, was hearty and intensely flavorful. The accompanying garlic smashed potatoes and vegetables rounded out the plate beautifully. And then came the Warm Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce—the best dessert of our trip. Moist, delicately sweet, and perfectly balanced, it was the ideal finale to an unforgettable meal.

We enjoyed a special off-menu treat for the third entree: BBQ Shrimp Linguine. The shrimp were smoky, tender, and juicy, served over perfectly al dente linguine—a family favorite we’ll talk about for a long time.

The service was exceptional—our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and truly one of the best in the city. The atmosphere was quaint and inviting, offering that quintessential New Orleans charm that makes every meal feel special.

The Gumbo Shop is an absolute must if you’re visiting New Orleans. Every dish tells a story, every bite feels like home, and you’ll leave already planning your return. It truly captures the heart and flavor of the Crescent City.
