Barbecue rules at this porch-fronted cafe specializing in Lowcountry African-American cooking.

Don’t miss out on this local gem outside Beaufort on the way to Hunting Island! Gullah Grub Restaurant features lowcountry cooking at its finest prepared in the traditions of the Gullah people living along Atlantic coastal regions. The building is super charming and filled with articles, photographs, and artwork related to the owners, Bill & Sara Green, and their mission to serve locally sourced organic foods. Bill was actually there and prepared our meals. I tried the chicken gumbo with a side of rice – she got the BBQ chicken lunch with potato salad and an extra side of mac-n-cheese. Of all these items, my favorite, by far, was the chicken gumbo – super thick and flavorful with a hint of smokiness – EXCELLENT! I mixed the rice with it and it was perfection. Next time I’ll try the shrimp gumbo. My second favorite item was the potato salad – seriously, the best I’ve ever had. Drinks were very good (I preferred the lemonade over the sweet tea). Corn bread is complimentary at the start – very tasty! We had room for a little dessert, so we asked our server for her recommendation – sweet potato pie or peach cobbler. The pie was her favorite, and it did not disappoint! We really felt like family in this restaurant, and the food was great. You must try this place if you’re in the Beaufort area!

Great service, terrific atmosphere, and almost all the food is great. The fried shrimp are wonderful, and the ribs are enormous and a great value.
I say “almost” only because the gumbo is more like a Brunswick stew with shrimp then a gumbo – no rice or peppers, tons of beans.
Anything else on the menu is outstanding.

Early dinner was out of this world! The food was all great (don’t sleep on the shark strips or the ribs), the chef is serving up family recipes that go back generations. Our server “Bubba” was wonderful and was kind enough to share some of the family’s history with us. The restaurant is no frills to be sure, but it fits the vibe so it’s still a solid 10 overall. This one should be on the Michelin list.

This restaurant is a slice of history that needs to be preserved. The service was great. The history on the walls was awesome. For me the food was just ok. I liked the shark. I have never had shark before, so didn’t know what to expect as far as texture was concerned. But the batter was seasoned well. I’m not a huge fan of potato salad on a normal day, so it was ok. The red rice was ok. The fried chicken was made well. It was very tasty. My friend’s dad enjoyed the ribs. And my husband really liked the shrimp.
I did not enjoy the sweet potato pie or the cobbler. But, others at the table did, so it probably has to do with our personal preferences when it comes to baked goods.

This restaurant is so unique and the history behind how and why it was created is truly remarkable.
The food is delicious. We had shark, shrimp, potato salad, and shrimp gumbo. Every single dish was delicious and tasted truly authentic to what I imagined low country food to be like.
You do not want to miss the opportunity to enjoy a meal at this wonderful little local spot.

If I could give this place a zero, I would. We were the only ones there for lunch. This should have been a red flag. The lady took our oder from across the room sitting down. Then, when the food came, it was disgusting. The gumbo tasted like watered down tomato sause with no flavor. My little one ordered the mac and cheese. However, it tasted more like egg than cheese again, no flavor. My husband ordered the ribs, and he said it tasted like a heat up meal. We were so excited to try this place just to be sooooooo disappointed. The only things we liked were the pictures and the history. I should have read the reviews before going, and then I would have seen the other reviews saying small portions, no flavor, overpriced, and bad service.

One of the best food experiences I’ve had in a long time. Bubba (whose family owns the joint) was our server and he couldn’t have been more friendly, interesting and engaging. I loved learning about his family, Gullah food, fox hunting… plus I had my first-ever gumbo and let me tell you — shrimp? It kinda freaks me out. So I was nervous. But it was SO good that I got another 16 oz cup to go. Whenever I’m in the area again, I will take whoever is with me to this restaurant.

Love this place! Food was delicious. The chef and waitress were very friendly and service was excellent. We loved visiting with them. I would definitely go back if in the area again. We had gumbo, red rice, collards, mac and cheese, sweet potato pie, and peach cobbler. The food was different and better than I expected.

Definitely worth a visit! We got the shrimp and rib lunches, mac and cheese, shrimp gumbo, cornbread, lemonade and swamp water and a peach cobbler to go. Everything was great and staff was friendly and helpful in a charming atmosphere. Prices are a little expensive for smaller portions, but worth it to support a local business.
