Great local brew pub! Fun atmosphere with a unique waiting space when busy where you can grab a drink inside and play checkers while you wait for your table. The food was great and came out fast, our server was very friendly and the kids got cookies for dessert with their kids meals which was a fun little addition! Loved the drink menu and variety offered also, we’d absolutely come back if ever in the area again!

The Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb is a must-visit. Don’t let the name fool you—it’s a gem! The handcrafted beers are outstanding, and the pub fare is elevated and delicious, and the Reuben is amazing. The charming, rustic atmosphere and friendly staff make it a perfect place to unwind with a great brew and a bite to eat. A true Wisconsin treasure.

Arrived as they opened on a Saturday. Had no problem ordering quickly.
The Uff-Da pretzel was giant! And one of the best pretzels I’ve had. The beer cheese and honey mustard made for great dipping sauces. The perfect amount of salt on the pretzel.
We ordered a cheese pizza which was your average pizza. The patty melt was cooked to order perfectly. The two Grumpy Troll burgers were both overcooked. The bbq sauce was… interesting. Too much tang/vinegar for both diners.

Great place for dinner while visiting Mt. Horeb! It was definitely busy on a Saturday but even when we were quoted at a 20 minute wait, we got a table much faster than that. They have a variety of beers that you can make a 4 beer flight from, plus a pretty extensive list of THC drinks (not super common in most restaurants!). The cheese curds were warm and delicious, and all our food came out quickly and was great! The standout was the Beer Cheese Soup. We would definitely come back again!

Overall, food and beverages were satisfying. However, prices were on the steep side, which is expected in a touristy village location. Food wait time is a bit long even with minimum customer occupants in bar/restaurant but worth the wait. The food was delicious! The main floor consists of many seating options such as a mixture of booths, bar counter stools, low tables, and high top chairs. TVs above the bar and an interior display window of their brewery operation. Good natural lighting from the front windows with vintage style lighting scattered throughout the rest of the space. Waiting staff are excellent with positive and focused work ethic.

I thought it would be a great place to grab dinner while in town. First time to this place and last time. We walk in and not busy at all. The server was not very nice or welcoming. She seats us and walks away. We sit there for 10-15 minutes before she came back. They sat us close to the door and was super cold. We asked if we could move. Wait staff gave us attitude about it. We did end up moving, but after our food came to the table waitress never came back till we called her over for the bill. Food was ok but was not great. Pretty upset that it was a horrible visit. I should of never even took a seat.

Just wow!! Not in a good way. We just returned from the Grumpy Troll and I’m so stunned, I have to write this. We used to live in Mount Horeb and used to be mug club members. Since moving, we’ve missed the place and were excited to visit while in the area. We were there around 6pm on Saturday Feb 21, 2026. Things were ok, but we noted the margaritas we ordered had no tequila flavor at all. They tasted like marg mix over ice cubes. The friend we brought with us is a tequila connoisseur and is pretty familiar with different tequilas and flavors. She agreed… the drinks tasted like mocktails. We mentioned it kindly to our waitress and even said, “Totally know it’s not your fault and this is weird, but these taste like they don’t contain any tequila. And I never complain about food or drink when dining out but this was so odd so figured I’d mention it.” She said she’d let the manager know. She brought us our full bill which we paid immediately, including the $11 per drink for three margaritas. She apologized again after taking payment and said the manager was still coming to talk to us. We hadn’t asked for that and we said “ok, but we aren’t blaming you… just letting you know.” The bartender/manager then stopped by the table and immediately started defensively, loudly and rudely telling us that he made the drinks and they contained a lot of tequila. Then, he yelled that we were not to be taking things out on our waitress (which we had not done). He then stormed off with no apology, nothing. He basically yelled at us and walked away. My husband, myself and our guest were shocked at his behavior and accusations. We were left utterly speechless by a place we used to love and frequent. As business owners ourselves, we hope the general manager and owners work with their team to interact more professionally with clientele. Sadly, we won’t be back.

Overall Impression
This was our first visit to The Grumpy Troll and it offered a mixed bag. The atmosphere was excellent, and the menu looked incredibly promising, suggesting a truly delicious meal. Unfortunately, our excitement was quickly overshadowed by extremely disappointing service and an issue with one of our main dishes.
The Food
The dishes we tried were a study in contrasts. The Nono Chicken Sandwich was fantastic—perfectly cooked and seasoned. However, the pork belly sandwich was significantly undercooked, making the meat so tough and chewy it was inedible. We had to send it back. The fact that one dish was great shows the kitchen can deliver, but the issue with the pork belly was a major failure.
The Service & Management Failure
The service was the biggest issue of the night. Our server seemed overwhelmed and disorganized. They took so long to check back on us that one of us had already finished their meal before we had the chance to flag the issue with the pork belly sandwich and request a replacement.
The most shocking part, however, was the management’s handling of the situation. After the issue was brought to their attention, the manager never came to our table to apologize or check in. They initially tried to charge us 50% of the returned sandwich, claiming it was because we ate the accompanying fries—a confusing and frankly absurd rationale.
Our server had to go back and forth and eventually returned with a bill where the item was finally fully comped, but the manager still never appeared. For a restaurant to not have a manager address a significant food quality complaint directly is poor customer service. While the server was clearly trying their best under difficult circumstances, management’s lack of engagement or apology suggests a major flaw in their operations.
Final Takeaway
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the Nono Chicken Sandwich was a highlight, but the combination of undercooked food, slow service, and especially the poor customer service from the management makes it hard to recommend. The management team needs to step up and realize that the way they handle problems is just as important as the food they serve.
