I forgot to get good photos of the drinks and starters because they were gone in a flash.
We started with the Brussels sprouts, they were delicious with nice surprise chunks of bacon and crispy onions. I could have used them a hair less charred from the broil, but it did enhance the flavor and was definitely intentional.
We also enjoyed the ricotta and garlic on fresh baked focaccia bread.
For entrees I had the pork chop. It was thick, flavorful, and juicy. I was worried at the lack of sear, but I had no reason to be concerned. It was resting on a pillow of mash potatoes with a rich demiglaze store sauce. Around it were some potato pancakes, apple spheres, and roasted carrots.
My friend’s got The Sauce…. Which was great. The sauce was as you expected and there were nice chunks of pork.
The Red Vegetable Curry which was as delicious as it was beautiful. It had a nice heat level to it that was appropriate for both beginners and experienced curry eaters.
The seafood gumbo was also a spectacularly beautiful and delicious dish. I was concerned that the andouille was going to over power the dish, but it was well balanced with a comforting smoky flavor throughout.
Desserts we had the seasonal bread pudding which was gone before I could get a photo or a bite. The milk and cookies, which were a little disappointing in their mediocrity. They were good; exactly as promised, but that’s all. The star dessert for me was the chocolate hazelnut pot de creme. It was perfectly balanced between sweet, salty, rich, and a hint of bitter from the chocolate. I could have eaten a few of these!
To start, the atmosphere is perfect. It’s dark, moody, and we loved that we could hear the live music playing on the lower level. The table was cozy. The bathrooms were clean and well decorated.
The staff is incredible. They were all very warm & kind – from the hostess to the food runners. Our server was outstanding – I wish I could remember his name! He was wearing a string of pearls. He went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience and we cannot thank him enough.
The food – omg! Every item was so delicious. We ordered a little bit of everything and there wasn’t one thing we didn’t like. We were blown away by the raw tuna special with grapefruit & jalapeño.
If you haven’t tried Grist I highly recommend you stop in! I can’t wait to go back again!
Then came time to sit. We met our waiter and we were NOT disappointed. Jeff was the most friendly and warm staff member at any restaurant I’ve experienced. The food, was beyond delicious. The decor in the building is perfectly done. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere, friendly and welcoming. What an absolute treasure for this town to finally have a little classier and charismatic place to sit down and enjoy the evening.
I cannot recommend this place enough!
Grist was one of the most anticipated openings in the area—and it still managed to blow us away. The food was beyond anything we expected. Every dish on the menu is so thoughtfully curated and packed with flavor. You can tell this is a chef-driven experience where every detail matters.
I grew up in HFL, we used to live in D.C. (where good food is not hard to come by), and we now live in Texas. My husband—who is not easy to impress—turned to me and said, “That was the best meal we’ve ever had in Upstate New York. Ever.” And I agree.
The concept is rooted in tapas—everything is made to be shared, and the pricing reflects that. Each plate is designed to bring people together, and it absolutely works. The atmosphere is cozy, elevated, and effortlessly refined.
Knowing that a brother and sister brought the old mill back to life in this way makes it even more special. Grist is something truly unique for Honeoye Falls, and honestly, for all of Rochester, New York.
10/10 food, atmosphere, and service. We’ll be back when in town —again and again.
