Grin City Bakery is one of the best reasons to visit Grinnell, Iowa.
I grew up in Central Iowa, and this place is one of the best-kept secrets around. I discovered Grin City just two months ago and have been hooked ever since. Their sausage kolaches are absolutely to die for—especially the jalapeño sausage kolaches. It’s like a perfectly baked roll wrapped around a juicy sausage, similar to a pig in a blanket, but better in every way.
I’ve never had a bad item from Grin City. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. 10/10 would recommend—this bakery is worth the trip.

Grin City Bakery has “the best” Blueberry donut I’ve had. I’ve been back and forth across the country and they have real blueberries in them. Perfect consistency for a donut. Anytime I’ve been there, they staff is always friendly and there is always a line of people in the store. I was coming from CR and forgot to email my order in before they closed. Andy responded to me later that day and he had them boxed up for me the next morning. Thanks to my brother and sister in-law, I now make the 2 hour round trip drive more often than anyone should for a dozen donuts!

Grin City is the reason I get up on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays! I love their old fashioned donuts, their uniquely flavored Bismarck’s, and the spicy kolache. Super friendly folks with awesome baked goods.

I’m working in town I’m from a different area of Iowa. Looked online to see if the city had a nice donut shop, and to my surprise it did! It was Friday, and thought I’d get the guys donuts. I thought I had seen online that GCB sold cinnamon rolls cheaper by the dozen, and thought I’d buy a couple dozen cinnamon rolls for the job site. I get there, wait in line, and when it’s my turn the elder gentleman asks “what would you like” in turn I ask “how much for a dozen cinnamon rolls”, the elder gentleman steps to the counter turns the sign around on the counter so he can see it holds his glasses and reads the price to me, really put on a nice little show. Then adds up the price (like I’m stupid and can’t do math) of what a dozen cinnamon rolls would be at the individual price, then tells me he doesn’t give a discount on a dozen cinnamon rolls, only discount he gives is on glazed donuts ( I believe that’s right). So I tell him I’ll take a dozen donuts, told him I was sorry thought I had seen online he gave a discount on a dozen cinnamon rolls. He stood there with his hands on top of the counter impatiently waiting for me to choose the dozen I wanted. I paid for the donuts, gave a small tip (shouldn’t have given any) and the kid at the cash register stood there drinking his coffee never said one word to me. When my receipt printed he just stood there sipping his coffee not making eye contact with me, and I had to reach across and take my receipt off the printer myself. The elderly gentleman thanked me before I left. Took the donuts to the job and only six of them got eaten, they were slightly better than my local gas station donuts. I expected better, but they really matched the attitudes of the staff in the business. I try donuts at a lot of different places, and have no problem spending extra money on quality donuts. I paid twenty some odd dollars on the donuts from this shop, and could have paid half that at the local gas station. Had the staff had better attitudes and the man just told me the price for the cinnamon rolls, I would have bought two dozen cinnamon rolls, possibly made it a regular thing for the guys. I won’t return, how you treat your customers when selling a product is everything.

OMG!!! Best. Donuts. Ever. Cinnamon rolls like my mom used to make! The coneys are a favorite in our house. They have several daily items and rotate their cake donuts and specialty items throughout the week. Highly, highly recommend.

We stopped here to grab some donuts for the first time and it was a great stop! The donuts are delicious and the people are fantastic! I have had the vanilla bizmark so far and it was among the best that I have had. The donut itself is tender and airy and the filling was creamy and flavorful. I can’t wait to try my others.
The owner was there when we stopped and both he and the other person working were great. Very personable and seemed to truly appreciative us stopping.
The prices are good considering the excellent donuts and fantastic people.
Overall, I am glad that we stopped and am looking forward to our next visit.

If you are passing through Grinnell on and early morning Thursday-Saturday morning you must stop and get a treat. The donuts are amazing. The service is great and the owners are wonderful.

A coworker told me the Cronuts are “life-changing.” My life has never been the same since I tried one. I can never go back to the days of discount Walmart donuts. Now I actually wake up before noon on Saturdays to get a fresh donut from Grin City.
