We enjoyed an amazing dinner celebrating our friend’s birthday! Rick and Kasey were an excellent serving team, both engaging and attentive to our needs. We were excited to choose from the new menu. Our group of four enjoyed the Chilean sea bass, rack of lamb, crab cakes and snapper à la Oscar. The wine and cocktail list was extensive as well. We’ll be back soon.

Amazing!! Our first time in Oriental and Gretchen’s was recommended to us by a local. We were blown away by the food! The service was over the top! Richard was amazing as both our host and our waiter. He went above and beyond and provided the BEST service. I recommend the Pear Martini to start and the cocktail crab claws were superb. The sweet pepper crab bisque was fantastic! My husband had the Halibut with grilled pineapple and fried corn. The pineapple and fried corn would have been a great meal on their own but the Halibut was seasoned to perfection and was tender and meaty. We will be back!!!

A welcome addition to this sleepy sailing town. We took our out of town guest here who is also a foodie and she raved on the bolognese. Her own words “… several flavors and tones that should be competing but harmonized instead.” I had the roasted duck with the pureed carrots. Duck was not overdone and the orange fig sauce complimented it nicely. The carrots I think stole the show. The chef didn’t skimped on the butter and I think there’s a hint of nutmeg. Hubby ordered the whole flounder baked on parchment. I think that one needed a touch more seasoning. Presentation was on par with others we had on other restaurants.
Service was superb. Our waiter was very attentive so was the owner who made sure he stopped at each table and didn’t hesitate to clear plates when needed.
Last but not the least, the decor and ambiance inside is what would you expect in a respectable Raleigh or noVA restaurants so don’t let that small sign at street side fool you.
Giving it a 4 star for now, Still need to try the other items on the menu and will update after that.

Big city dining meets small town convenience! We love our small town and are so blessed to have this fine dining experience close to home! Our party of 16 was treated to excellent service, top chef cuisine and first class ambience! Rick made sure our tables were set and ready and Kayla provided excellent service. Everyone’s food arrived at the perfect temperature and at the same time. Not an easy feat with such a large party! Thank you for providing a memorable Valentine’s celebration. We had another wonderful meal at Gretchen’s Bistro in Oriental. As always, our cocktails were expertly prepared by a skilled, friendly bartender, and the evening was made even more enjoyable by the wonderful piano accompaniment in the background. I started the meal with French bread and a house salad, which were both fresh and satisfying, and my scallop entrée with polenta was absolutely decadent. The scallops were cooked perfectly and beautifully plated. The food here is consistently excellent, and this visit was no exception.
We were so pleased, that we weren’t quite ready for the evening to end and happily overindulged by ordering the gelato flight. It was creamy, delicious, and the perfect finishing touch to an already fantastic meal.
What truly stood out this time was the service. We arrived without a reservation on a night when there was an event upstairs and tables were limited. Our waiter, Rick, whom we hadn’t had the pleasure of being served by before, went out of his way to make room for us and took wonderful care of us throughout the evening. Even though he was clearly very busy, he never missed a beat, delivering a level of service well beyond what you typically expect. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy taking care of his guests. He is truly an asset to the dining room.

My friends and I enjoyed an absolutely marvelous evening at Gretchen’s Bistro last Thursday. We were seated and served by a double-team of wonderful attentive waiters, Rick, an expert professional hand, with his quick-learning protégé, Daniel, in tow. They were very attentive and efficiently took our orders and delivered our beverages, bread and dinners. My entree was an exquisitely pan-seared halibut steak accompanied by a browned jalapeño butter sauce and grilled pineapple. It was a novel but unbeatable combination and the seasoning was exactly right–packed with nuanced flavor without too much heat. My dining partners also raved about their dinner selections of pan-seared salmon and shrimp with polenta. The atmosphere is relaxed but the decor and the space and service combine to give Gretchen’s Bistro a warm elegance that makes it a lovely place to dine out in Oriental.

Wanting to catch up with some friends and eat somewhere new, we happened upon Gretchen’s Bistro. I emailed them a day ahead for dinner reservations for Saturday evening and got confirmation within hours. We arrived at our reservation time and were immediately taken to a table in the piano room (no one playing live) with some light background music, which is really ideal for conversation. Some large dining room restaurant spaces can be loud and exhausting to talk over. Our server was extremely attentive and the food was prepared to perfection. My wife had the crab cake entree which was lump crab meat without extra filling. I had the surf and turf which included a crab cake, crab legs, and a steak you could cut with a butter knife. While a little pricier than other options in the area, the quality of the food and the atmosphere make it a great value. We’re happy we found this gem so close to home and look forward to coming back!
