The Joker: A pastrami cheese, which was stacked with meat (see pics), although could’ve use additional toppings in combo of meat (get the Joker sauce on the side). Solid 8/10.
For additional $, get it on the Dutch Crunch bread—it was soft and didn’t shred the roof of my mouth like Ike’s Dutch Crunch.
The Side: The Jalapeño Popper Potato Salad. Cold potato salad that had a jalapeño crunch. Decent. 7/10.
The Vibe: Feels like a busy NYC deli + market . Dining is available, through a hallway backdoor and on porch. It was a bit uninviting, but did the job. Solid recommendation to try out.
I’ll be back for sure.
But there are concerns with this place for sure.
Before let me tell you that the prices are still reasonable. The food still OK.
I had a small Tuna and it was really good. The tuna was not stinky, it didnt smell or tasted old. I was very pleased with it. I would had prefer lettuce intead of the coldslaw and I will tell you why below. Besides the tuna, the pickles and the coldslaw there was nothing else, even though the presentations showed more veggies.
I also had the Nashville chicken sandwich with fries. The chicken patty’s breading was good not heavy and the chicken had a spicy flavor but it wasnt spicy. Again, instead of lettuce it had coldslaw. And even though I paid $1 for jalapeños I ended getting five slices that were mostly butts. The buns were really good. But the coldslaw made them soggy and it was too much it took away from the chicken flavor.
Now lets talk about the elephant in the room…. this is so you know what youre walking into and know what to expect.
First, the service is closer to terrible than ok. And that goes for the girl taking the order to the girls doing the sandwiches. It can be a lot better. Customer service is not there strong quality at all.
Second, I didnt get to see what grading this place has but it needs cleaning and better food handling. The person doing both of my sandwiches had gloves that he used to open and close the latches on the prepping station and the fridge. But then he opened the coldslaw and with the same gloves he scoop a handful of the coldslaw and placed it in both of my sandwiches. Not with a spoon or spatula but with his hands even though the latches on both appliances are open and close constantly and most likely are dirty. I didnt see one cleaning rag at all.
I saw another girls taking out the trash and cardboard at the same time she was prepping a sandwich, I get you want to multitask but not with my food… please!!!
My sanwich came with fries, but the oil that the fries were being fried smelled like it had been used for days, it was passed the usage and most likely the heat threshold so it was fuming. I couldnt eat my fries because they tasted like burned stalled oil.
If you can, order because if you see how they prep the food, you probably won’t eat it.
Again, am grateful I have this place so close and I did love the tuna but the way the food was prepped left me stomach sick. So thread lightly and if you see something say something. At the end of the day we are paying for a service and instead of just making this the standard we need to say something so they can be better.
I want this place to be better so I can feel good about eating their food.
We tried the “definitely smash burger” lol… and the “green shack signature”. This sandwich and burger were delicious! I highly recommend visiting this place asap!
The meatball sub was outrageously good. The bread is nice and soft but it held firm and didn’t become a soggy mess from the marinara, which happens a lot with meatball sandwiches. The meatballs were also very tender, which is something else that a lot of places seem to drop the ball on. Sauce was delicious, plenty of cheese, great sandwich all around.
The corn was also quite tasty, though do be warned it’s got a decent bit of heat (or at least mine did). I liked that and thought it was really good, but something to be aware of.
Solid, solid local spot.
