The reviewers don’t lie about this wonderful little place. Friends have told us about it, and the reviews tell a story too. The location in Loomis is a little off the beaten path (you think you are leaving town), and in a super small strip mall. Step inside and you find a cute little family owned restaurant that will make you wonder “where did I just get transported to?”… A few tables in the front room and a second dining area to the right.
It is important to note that you MUST be patient! There is only the owner running the front of house here. She is doing everything. Super friendly, and being as quick as she can to get tables cleared, people seated, orders taken and served. She does all of this with the most wonderful smile and personality. You will immediately fall in love with her. Many of the diners on this particular night already knew her and appeared to have long standing relationships with the family.
We came in on a Saturday evening around 5:15pm and the floor was packed. It remained that way until around 6:30pm. I would suggest coming in later in the evening so the ‘regulars’ can get in and out.
Ok, so now on to the food and why the Green Elephant is such a standout.
Everything is super fresh, and flavorful with great depth in the sauces. We started with the tea leaf salad, and pork lumpia. Then Panang chicken and spicy garlic pepper pork and an order of rice. We love spicy food, and requested such (she has a spice scale of 1-10). Our mains were a level 7 and that was sufficient to give us good heat without compromising the flavors. She will also bring you a small dish of chili pepper oil if you want even more heat.
By the time we were finished, the floor had cleared, so we know now to arrive a little later. But, return we will !!!

This is a food experience. Can’t believe we haven’t eaten here before. Make sure you have reservations though as they only take a certain number of people per evening. Make certain you get the coconut chicken soup with your order. The green tea salad is excellent as well. So many levels of flavor. We also had a vegetable coconut curry.

They have very friendly and personal-feeling service because the waitress was very helpful in giving us suggestions in what to order and helped us pick things that she recommended. This was very nice because it was our first time and she helped us pick delicious traditional Burmese food. They have good vegan options and the food in general has a very good taste. Overall it has a very authentic feel with interesting and delicious flavors. If you like to try new things this is a very good option.

Got back from a trip to Thailand and one of the experiences we had was how to make cold pressed coconut oil. The class included lunch and was Burmese. Fell in love with the Tea Leaf Salad and when we returned I had to find it near me. Found this place on a Google search and am so glad I did. We went there, unassuming, small place but with great service. The owner is the host, server and boss lady. Probably only one or two cooks in the back and keep that in mind. The food was amazing, fresh, flavorful and with a generous portion, we had leftovers. I had went back a few days later to get another order of the Tea Leaf Salad and the Curry Beef.

We had:
1. Curry chicken and potatoes. Tasty, but there were not many potatoes.
2. Shrimp Pad Thai was excellent! Highly recommended.
3. Tea salad, the house specialty, was excellent. Avoid if you have nut allergies.
4. Black bean catfish had great flavor. The catfish is, of course, boneless. The texture of the fish was a bit mushy.
*These dishes were eaten over white rice.
There is plenty of parking and an easy to find location.
The service left a bit to be desired. Definitely mom and pop. It seemed like Mom was waiting tables, and Pop was cooking. Service and food came out slowly. However, if you have time, the food was not bad & certainty easy on the pocketbook at this “Hole-in-the-wall” in Loomis.

Oh my, we decided to come back here and get the Chili Jam Chicken with mee go rah, and of course the green tea salad. Amazing spice, not too hot and full of flavor.

The Green Elephant is an AWESOME restaurant! Everything we’ve ever ordered is fresh, flavorful and delicious. Absolutely order the Tea Leaf salad – it IS SO GREAT! Another must have is the Chicken Chee-Chat Garlic Noodles – ohmygod YUM! You can’t go wrong. The only staff is the owners- Rachel up front and her husband cooking in the back, and they have a limited amount of tables. Once their full, their full and you’ll have to go back another night. We love The Green Elephant – you won’t be disappointed!

The only Burmese restaurant I’m aware of in a 50 mile radius, Green Elephant is unmatched, serving dishes that seem to bridge iconic Indian and Southeast Asian meals. I love the lighting and decoration of the dining room, and the woman who runs the place is very attentive, helpful, and easy going. I am not especially familiar with classic Burmese food, but Green Elephant seems to be an excellent place to get acquainted.
Tea leaf Salad – Savory, crunchy, and lightly acidic, with a variety of toasted seeds and nuts. A great starter and an excellent dish alongside a cold beer.
Chili Jam Chicken – A strange name that perfectly describes this delicious entree. Sweet, spicy, nutty, tangy, and aromatic. The chicken is marinated in a house chili jam and it shows, very tender and flavorful.
Mixed Vegetable Curry – Great variety of vegetables (lotus root!) in a savory, sweet, coconut milk broth.
Mee Goreng – Stir fried noodles with curry powder flavor and plenty of vegetables. Perfectly easy fried egg on top, with lime and lao gan ma.
Also, they make fresh mango lassi! Overall a wonderful restaurant with awesome vegetarian options that I will definitely be returning to.
