Indian Cuisine is a combination of subtle tastes. Fragrant and exotic spices from India blended to create the dishes we present to you. These dishes are of South Gujrat and Northern Indian origin and are prepared in our restaurant exactly as in our own home. Each dish will have its own distinctive flavour and aroma which cannot come from any curry powder, but from spices and herbs specially prepared by ourselves. Indian foods properly prepared, take time, so please bear with us.

After an initial disappointment with our order through uber eats, I spoke to a few friends about the experience as they have had positive experiences with Great Indian. We spoke about different influences from the various regions of India and, therefore, how the dishes can differ from expectations. We ordered butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and chicken korma.

I absolutely love Great India. The food is always delicious, the tandoori breads are top quality and the onion bhaji is easily the best I’ve had in New Zealand.
However, it is the staff that really set this restaurant apart from the rest. Every time I visit Great India, which is often, I am made to feel so welcome.
I love taking my friends and family from out of town to this restaurant as I know it’s a guaranteed great dining experience. The atmosphere, food and friendly staff always seem to form the foundations for a great night full of great conversation.

During our tour, we decided to visit Great Indian, and it was absolutely not a disappointment. We truly appreciated the exceptional service, and the food was outstanding. The unique style of service was mind-blowing. In my last 11 years in New Zealand, I have never experienced this level of service and hospitality. They truly deserve a 5+ star rating. One of the best places in Wellington for authentic Indian food. We had a great experience dining with a group of 12 people from work. The staff were amazing, very professional, and well experienced. The table service was an unexpected and pleasant surprise, and the extra touch of providing wiping cloths after dinner really stood out. Had lunch at Great India a few years ago and it was lovely. Dined in yesterday and unfortunately the food quality has significantly dropped; the curries are still edible, but only just. My friend and I ordered butter chicken at varying spice levels, we both agreed they were quite horrible. Not interested or having the energy for conflict, we answered positively when asked if everything was OK. The restaurant is also significantly overpriced for what it is. However, the garlic naan was good and the service was friendly. Though overall, a disappointing dining experience – would not recommend and will not be returning.
I see the responses on others reviews stating the recipes have not changed which may be true, but something has. I expect a hostile response to this but I don’t care, neither me or my friend are locals. To fellow potential diners, please don’t waste your time or money here. You’ll regret it.

Spectacular on all fronts (seating, service, menu, quality and atmosphere are all superb).
I cannot recommend Great India restaurant highly enough.
We ate here twice during our time in Wellington. Both times were an absolute delight.
I would fly to Wellington from Australia just to eat here again.

You are completely missing the point of our review and diverting the issue to liquor rules and arrival time instead of addressing the real problem.
This review is not about BYO, not about timing, and not about liquor laws. We fully understand and respect New Zealand licensing rules. We paid for drinks at your restaurant, so please stop implying that alcohol was the reason for our dissatisfaction. That is simply untrue.
The core issues remain:
Very poor food quality, especially the fish curry, which was inedible
Rude and disrespectful service, particularly from Sagar
Unprofessional behaviour toward paying customers
When customers buy food, the basic expectation is good food and respectful service. That did not happen. Many dishes were left unfinished because they were not good, not because we were upset about anything else. Paying the full bill does not suddenly make bad food acceptable.
Instead of acknowledging these concerns, you chose to:
Name individual guests publicly
Shift blame onto customers
Avoid taking responsibility for food quality and staff behaviour
That response itself reflects the same lack of professionalism we experienced in person.
We were polite, we paid in full, and we left quietly. The review was honest and based on our experience. Deflecting criticism rather than addressing it only confirms our concerns.

We visited Great India Restaurant, Wellington as a group of 14 people and had one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in New Zealand.
The food quality was very poor, especially the fish curry, which was not good at all. Most of us could not eat the food and left it half-finished, yet we still paid the full bill and walked out disappointed.
The service was even worse. The staff were very rude, and one staff member in particular, Sagar, was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. This kind of behavior toward customers is unacceptable.
We are from Auckland and travel often. We have never experienced such bad service compared to Indian restaurants like Rutba (Takanini) or Mela (Papatoetoe), which offer excellent food and hospitality.
Wellington really needs authentic Indian food with real taste and proper service. Unfortunately, this restaurant does not meet that standard at all.
We will not be returning and do not recommend this place to others.
