Finally tried dining in after ordering takeout from here many times. The peppercorn beef was my favorite! It’s very tender with a strong numbing flavor. The Zigong spicy frog with ginger was also excellent, with tender meat and a bold sour-spicy broth that goes great with rice.

Great spot for anyone who loves authentic, bold Sichuan flavors!

If you’re looking for truly authentic Sichuan food in New Jersey, this place (formerly Da Sichuan, now Mala Temptation) is absolutely worth a visit. You can tell the kitchen really understands Sichuan flavors — the spice is layered, the numbing is balanced, and the aroma comes from proper technique rather than heavy oil.

The spicy boiled fish was excellent (tender, clean flavor, not greasy), the Zigong ginger frog tasted fresh and well-handled, and the mao xue wang was rich but not overwhelming. The grilled fish was consistently flavorful throughout, and even the Chongqing-style noodles showed great attention to detail.

This is not a toned-down version of Sichuan food — if you love real spice and depth of flavor, it’s a place you’ll want to come back to.

Spice Spirit, imo, is easily one of the best Sichuan spots in Jersey City. Such a hidden gem. Their fish and frog dishes are standouts! Both are fragrant and packed with that numbing-spicy Sichuan flavor! You can really taste the freshness and technique in every bite.

I also love the open kitchen setup where you can watch the chefs cooking everything fresh to order. The heat, the aromas, and the wok action make the whole dining experience even better. Trust me, this is definitely a must-visit for Sichuan food lovers.

Small place, big surprise. One bite and I felt like I was back in Chengdu. We tried four dishes and every single one was a hit. The owner told us they just hired a chef from Mala Temptation—totally explains the flavor!
Top picks:
Spicy Chicken (辣子鸡) – crispy outside, tender inside, super fragrant.
Numbing Pepper Beef (椒麻牛肉) – real Sichuan heat, spicy and addictive.
Garlic Grilled Fish (蒜香烤鱼) – fried first, full of garlic aroma; tastes even better the next day.
If you love authentic spicy food, this place is a must-try!

I understand Grand Sichuan recently changed ownership/management.

My family always ordered the triple vegetable. The new version is similar, but adds sweet potato and onions. It’s a bit enhanced.

We ordered the 1,000 pages of tofu, which was also very good. However, I felt the Sichuan peppercorn oil was excessive for my tastes, and made part of my mouth numb for a couple minutes. I wouldn’t order it again unless they reduced the peppercorn oil.

We ordered several lo mein dishes. The servings were quite generous.

Water was served in paper cups, which was a bit unusual. Service was good.

I received a free drink for an honest review.

Grand Sichuan in JC was a great find. We ordered the mala grilled fish, spicy frog, and mapo tofu — all were flavorful and well-executed.

The grilled fish was aromatic with plenty of dried chilies and peppercorns, spicy but balanced. The frog was fresh and meaty with a rich, bold sauce. Mapo tofu was silky with a nice numbing kick and perfect with rice.

Everything tasted freshly cooked — not pre-made. Solid spot for authentic Sichuan food in Jersey City.

Grand Sichuan ( new name is now Spice Spirit) is a cozy and inviting restaurant. Customers can see how the chef cooks their dishes through glass. Our servers were attentive and friendly. My wife and I ordered a large portion of pepper cone fish and stir fried pea sprouts. We were hesitating whether we should add also fried cauliflower. Our server told us it might be too many dishes for two seniors. It turned out that she was correct. Our dishes were freshly prepared and authentic (We both grew up in Chengdu and know whether they are truly Sichuan dishes ). Recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates Sichuan cuisine.

This place just reopened after a fresh renovation and feels bright and welcoming. Love the open kitchen where you can see the chefs working the woks and it smells amazing.
The pea and minced pork noodles are a must try, super springy with a rich spicy sauce. 5/5
Dry fried pork intestines were perfectly crispy and tender and both the spicy sliced fish and the pig blood in spicy soup were full of flavor and ingredients. 5/5
Big portions and fair prices make this my go to spot when I crave real Sichuan food!!

Recently rebranded with a new name and an updated menu — and it’s even better than before.
The Sichuan mala flavors are bold yet balanced, with that perfect numbing heat and deep aroma. Spicy but not overwhelming, and very approachable even for first-timers. A great place to experience authentic Chinese spice.

I had an excellent experience at Grand Sichuan. The food is clearly made to order – nothing feels like pre-made or reheated dishes. Every plate came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor.

The dishes taste very authentic, just like the Chinese food I’ve had in China, not the usual “Americanized” versions you see everywhere. The spices, textures, and ingredients all feel genuine and well balanced.
