We recently visited a wonderfully authentic Malayalee restaurant called the Grand Malabar that truly celebrates the flavors of Kerala. From the moment we walked in, the aroma of coconut, curry leaves, and spices made it clear this wasn’t your average Indian place.
The food was the star of the show — dishes like traditional fish curry meals, Ulli Bhajji, Fish Nirvana and Payampori were rich, flavorful, and reminiscent of home-style cooking rather than generic restaurant fare. The spices were balanced well, letting the coconut and fresh ingredients shine through without overpowering heat, just the way Kerala cuisine is known for.

Service was friendly and personal, with staff happy to explain dishes and recommend favorites. The portions were generous, and we enjoyed every bite. A few items, like the Kanthari Fish Fry and Kappa Biryani (Tapioca based dish) were particularly memorable — spicy, and full of character.

Overall with the ambience and food brought us back to memories of dining in Kerala.

We hit up Grand Malabar for lunch the other day. The vibe was really nice and chill, and the staff were super friendly and good chats with them.
We were worried it might be packed, but nope, it was totally manageable. Ambience and service? Easy 5 stars.

We ordered beef ularthiyathu (medium spicy), mutton curry, chicken kizhi parotta, and the Wayanadan Kanthari fish (whole pompano in kanthari chutney), all with parotta.

The beef ularthiyathu was good in texture and consistency, but it could’ve been spicier we’ll crank it up next time. Same with the mutton: decent with a little gravy, but both were missing some real flavor punch and authentic spices.

The chicken kizhi parotta was basically parotta layers stuffed with meat and gravy. It was okay, but again, not enough spice or that true Kerala kick.

Hands down, the best was the Wayanadan Kanthari fish super tasty, perfectly spiced. 5 stars for that one!

Oh, and the kids’ menu? Pretty much just chicken nuggets. Kinda basic for a place like this could use more options for families.

Finished with sambharam (spiced buttermilk), which was refreshing and spot on another 5 stars.
The parotta itself wasn’t great though didn’t feel like proper parotta at all. They should work on that.
Quick suggestion for the owners: Serve sambharam in small clay pots as a free welcome drink. Would be a cool traditional touch!

Overall, I’d say 3.5-4 stars, closer to 4. The fish and sambharam were highlights, service was awesome, but some dishes need more authentic flavor and spice. It’s a newer spot, so I’m sure they’ll tweak things and get even better. We’ll definitely go back!

This restaurant just opened about two months ago and is the first authentic Kerala restaurant in the city. We tried a few items including chicken/fish curry and beef ularthu which tasted authentic and amazing. We had lunch, then later came back for dinner to get more for takeaway. The restaurant was tastefully decorated, offereing a very nice ambience. The service was wonderful and prompt. They also offer tiffin service every Monday from 5 to 7pm and they do catering for events/parties as well. The portions were generous. I highly recommend to try this new place out. We will be sure to come back again!!

I’ll leave the determination of authenticity to the Malayalis, but as a Tamizh person, the moment I found out there was a Kerala restaurant in town, I had to come try the beef parotta-and it did not disappoint. I ordered the kizhi beef parotta, and it was absolutely divine. The food came out incredibly fast, the pricing was very reasonable, and the portion size was solid. And props for playing Ilayaraja songs-I’m choosing to believe they played them just for me . Honestly, the Triangle area might low-key be one of the most goated regions in the US for Indian cuisine.

Edit: I returned here with a gang of friends and ordered a whole range of dishes and am knocking down a star because the chicken and fish dishes were kind of average. I would stick to their beef and parotta based dishes which the place excels at.

I stopped by Grand Malabar for a weekday lunch and really enjoyed the warm service and relaxed ambiance – definitely a comfortable spot to dine in.

Food-wise, I’d say it was good but not extraordinary, averaging around 7/10. The parotta was a highlight – flaky, soft, and well cooked. The paneer tikka masala, while flavorful, was on the liquidy and tangy side. We also tried the vegetable varutharachathu, a coconut-based curry, which I’d rate 7/10. In fairness, we didn’t try any of their seafood dishes – a core part of Kerala cuisine and one of this restaurant’s specialties – so we may have missed their true strengths.

Overall, excellent service and ambiance make this a pleasant dining option, though for food I’d suggest going for their Kerala seafood dishes to get the most authentic experience.

Here for the first time. We absolutely loved the soft and lacey Kerala parotta with beef piralan. Kappa and Kottayam fish curry was delish. Will be back again soon with our friends. Head over to Grand Malabar if you would enjoy foods tied to love and memory. Loads of Love to all the 3 chefs in the kitchen. Special thanks to Mr. Anish, for making us the best parottas.

Fish pollichathu was okay, it lacked the authentic taste. Chicken varutharachathu was meh, chicken pieces were not of great quality. The menu makes you drool and crave for some of the kerala specialities, but the actual taste doesn’t live up to it. Biryani was great.

The Pulli Inji Chicken & Sambaram drink was extremely flavorful and delicious. The fish wrapped in banana leaf was very unique. Glad to have found a malabar restaurant which is different from other Indian dishes. Will definitely return back to try many other flavors from the menu.

First things first, don’t let the outside fool you. As soon as you pass the doors, you’re walking into an all-out restaurant. The decor and paintings are really beautiful and vibrant. And our waitress, Ms. Usha, and all the staff helping us were really nice and welcoming. Ms. Usha even helped pick out my drink when I was stuck!

Also, calling all vegetarians, this spot is for you. They have whole sections of the menu dedicated to vegetarian items, and all of the food we ate was awesome!

Starting with drinks, we had the Mango Lassi and the Mint Lime Fresh Juice!
I didn’t actually taste the Mango Lassi, but I guess it was good because it was finished before we even got our food. (10/10??)

I had low expectations of the Mint Lime Fresh Juice because well… it’s green. But it was actually delicious! The flavor was minty and earthy, but not bitter and the sweetness only made it better. I can’t wait to try it with soda next time! (8/10)

For food, we had the Appam, Veg Stew, Egg Roast, and Veg Biryani.
The Appam was soft and fresh with just enough crisp and it tasted amazing with the curries. (10/10).
The Veg Stew is my favorite curry to have with Appam. And this stew was creamy and silky, and the veggies were perfectly cooked!(9.5/10)
The Egg Roast was more savory, and flavorful. And the caramelized onions..ugh, delicious! And that well boiled, creamy egg?? Even better. (9/10)
The Veg Biryani(sorry, no pics) was flavorful, filling, and spicy. If you have low spice tolerance(me lol), please ask your waiter to dial it down because this dish packs some heat!(9/10)

Grand Malabar, we will be back soon!
