Bustling New York–style deli featuring hand-rolled bagels, soups & hot & cold sandwiches.

I love these bagels but they really need to fix their system for custom bagels. About half of the time my bagel comes toasted when I always ask for it untoasted, which is especially annoying because it takes longer to toast. Maybe 1/4 of the time they forget toppings like tomatoes. I’ve begun just getting plain bagels and adding cream cheese at home because of this, but I’d rather get a sandwich, I just have no faith that it’ll be made correctly. Bagels themselves are still great.

I went twice; once for breakfast and once for lunch. At 8:00 AM – I was the only one in the place and got fast service. At 1:00 PM – it was packed and I had 20 orders in front of me. You get choices of 20 different bagel sandwiches (if you don’t just get a bagel) with several choices of bagel and several choices of cream cheese. Easy to nearly “make your own”. Good sized and good value for the money.

Gotham Bagels has a really nice atmosphere and the food itself is genuinely tasty, which makes this review a bit tough, but unfortunately, our overall experience just didn’t live up to expectations. We went on a Saturday, so I expected a bit of a wait, but we ended up waiting about an hour for just three bagels, which felt excessive. Still, I was willing to overlook that until we got home and found that all three bagels were made on the wrong kind of bread. We had ordered two on everything bagels and one on garlic, but received what looked like whole wheat or something similar definitely not what we asked for. What really brought the experience down was the lack of communication; if they were out of the bagels we ordered, a quick heads-up would’ve gone a long way. Instead, we were left confused and a bit underwhelmed. Great flavor, but the poor service and incorrect order made it hard to justify more than two stars.

The food is delicious and I’ve never had a bad service experience. The only thing that has had me hesitant to comeback is the wait time. Last time we waited an hour for our bagels and once we finally got them they all had the wrong type of bagel. We understood they were busy so they might have not had the specific bagel we wanted but it would have been nice if they communicated that. The bagels were still good though and the pickle they add on the side is my favorite.

I fully admit, as a former NYer, I can be a bagel snob. The bagels here are ok. Not great, but not bad. The service is remarkably slow. I’ve been here a few times and I’m not quite sure why it takes so long to get a bagel. In NYC, there could be a line out the door and you’d probably get your bagel faster than here. But the worst part was that on a recent trip, I got a bagel that was supposed to have tomato and bacon and found out a few bites into it, that it had lox/salmon (it was under the tomatoes, and blended in, so I missed it at first). Which might not be a big deal to some folks, but I don’t eat salmon. Such a bummer to get home only to find that your $9.00 bagel is now a waste.
I know accidents happen, which is why I gave a 3 instead of a 1 for food/service, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

$5.25 for a toasted bagel with butter and this is what they give me- cold bagel, cold butter in a plastic dish. Bagel is solid size but still worse than Breugers. Would be disappointed even if I paid half as much.

Go classic or go home. Got a bacon egg and cheese everything bagel sandwich and it was not bad. Nice thick cut bacon, cheese was real and tasty, and the bagel was not too chewy. The coffee was local JBC roasters and flavorful as usual (even JBCs light roast is bold). The long wait times unfortunately are the reason I cannot give this place a higher rating, also no washroom. Don’t know what the heck takes so long to get a classic bagel sandwich, but if anyone can enlighten me, please do so!

This place is a gem in downtown Madison! The old-school New York vibe is super cool….felt like I stepped into a little slice of NYC. The bagels? Unreal. Best I’ve ever had, hands down. Fresh, perfectly chewy, and packed with flavor.
And Joey, the owner, is a total legend. Super friendly and full of personality. You can tell he really cares about what he’s doing. I’ll definitely be back!

Took me a little over a year of living here to finally try it. This place is legit delicious and they do not skimp on the toppings. I got the Original V, a vegan option, which was loaded with poblanos, avocado, tomato, and scallion cream cheese. Expect a wait because this place was packed to the brim barely 15 minutes after opening. With reason 🙂 My only take is it’s a LITTLE on the pricey end despite the amount of toppings you get, but delicious and also an easy endorsement for a place. I’ll visit frequently when I’m wanting to indulge a little more at breakfast time.

They have the best bagel in Madison, hands down.
However, it does take a long time to get a single bagel with cream cheese. I really like the product, but I don’t go very often because of how long it usually takes to prepare orders.
