Reviews
Portions: Small
Price: $15-$25 ish
Service: Good
Atmosphere: Basis Design simple restaurant theme. Open area for making xiaolongbao. Seems to be the theme for this kind of cuisines
The xiaolongbao is good with tasty soup inside. Taste just right, not so salty, but flavorful. Be careful it’s hot. The mini rib is different than others, it’s cut into large size, I like the size, however, it’s a bit sweet and maybe a tough too much on the vinegar. Maybe just me. Cauliflower is good, good wok qi, but it’s a bit salty and I agreed with my friend as well. The other 2 dish, it’s ok, as I am not big in spicy food and that noodle is ok.
One disappointment, the menu is not large. They are missing the fried dumplings which I like and was expecting to have some. Not on the menu. Also, missing the green onion pancake. Love those, but can’t get it there
Overall: I think it’s ok, nothing special or stands out for me. Don’t mind eating there again, but i wouldn’t choose this place over others if I felt like xiaolongbao again, but I do want my pan fried dumplings.
Must try: kurobota pork&crab meat soup dumplings, wagyu beef chinese burger, dried scallops&egg white fried rice.
If want something fancier, go with the beef short rib with lime sauce, very tender and well-seasoned meat.
Big surprise: the beverages! Will definitely come back just for the milk tea and slushy! Tried the cucumber glutinous rice mochi icy slush and the oolong milk tea, both very tasty!!
Seating was fast, even lines were long. Service is excellent too, food serving is very fast, 5 mins after we ordered the first batch we got our first dish. Servers always come around and gave us what we needed.
Would love to come back for third, fourth time!
Firstly, walking into the space feels like something both familiar yet new. The walls have murals of ink brushed landscapes and the plants you expect inside a Chinese restaurant. However, as your gaze continues to graze you start to see lamp fixtures you’d see on the cover of design magazines and chairs you wouldn’t be surprised on the set of Severance. The playful nature of earth tones and neutral colors means the space is mixed with tranquility and low buzz of excitement. It’s like you look around and you think, “I bet you the AC is real good in here on a summer day.”
The service here is quick. When you order food it is similar to a dim sum restaurant where they give you a slip of paper with a long list of different items. You tick off what food you want and how much. Once finished, the servers will pick up the orders and place a receipt with ordered items on your table. This way they know you receive the food you ordered as it comes out. Some items will take a bit longer than others but whatever you order it comes out hot and delicious.
Since food ultimately decides whether you’d want to return or not I have to highlight my favorite item here: A5 Wagyu “Chinese burger”. The name is a bit of a red herring as the “buns” are really a flaky, multilayered pastry thing similar to a flat croissant. In between them is perfectly cooked A5 Wagyu beef minced with onions. Every bite is so easy to take and packed with an instantly recognizable taste of decadence. My mouth is watering as I write this because I can remember it so vividly. It’s a bite you wish you could have over and over again, yet I think having just one might be the best course of action as too much of a good thing can ruin it. But not everyone has such willpower.
Their dumplings were also delicious although the best was probably their truffle dumplings. Coming out piping hot this specific dumpling has a light truffle taste that is neither overpowering nor underwhelming. It lies in a state of grace where it accentuates the ingredients in the dumpling without being the main note. It was such a unique take on a dumpling it was fun discovering the complexities with each dumpling. Make sure to eat them quickly as the AC inside the restaurant is very good and can cool the dumplings quickly.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this place. Although not an alley, this really is a good place. Try to come before 11:30 AM to beat the afternoon rush because it can get busy. Make sure to bring company so you can try all the items. And if you take a couple of their “Chinese burgers” home with you, you won’t be the first.
We showed up around 6:45 and waited about 30 mins for a table for 5 people. They also had a skewer menu that we didn’t get to try this time but I’ll definitely be back to try more of their dishes.
