Side note: not every dish is great but the majority are pretty good.
I recommend if you are in a small group, don’t order too much. 1 bowl of rice for every 2 toppings until you’re about to become a literal balloon is the general rule of thumb here.
The atmosphere is big, bold, and brassy. It’s very old-school Hong Kong style. It is large, noisy, and lively spot popular with local families.
Service can be a hit or miss at times. When this place gets busy quality control quickly degrades. I would try to avoid the busy times to enjoy the better experience.
They have a a large banquet hall and VIP rooms for events, along with a large parking lot in front of the restaurant.
From my experience. If Western Lake Restaurant is fully booked, Golden Swan across the street will always have a table or shorter waiting time for dim sum.
We recently celebrated my dad’s birthday here for dinner. The service and food is fantastic. It wasn’t too busy for Saturday night, about half full.
The Food
The food was definitely the highlight of the meal—everything was on point.
Dumplings: The shrimp scallops dumplings and the chive dumplings had perfectly translucent, chewy skins that didn’t break apart.
Honeycomb Tripe: This was tender and well-marinated with just the right amount of spice and garlic.
Malay Sponge Cake (Ma Lai Go): It was incredibly fluffy and had that deep, caramelized sweetness you look for.
Greens: Even the simple stir-fried greens were fresh and vibrant with plenty of garlic.
The Atmosphere & Service
The biggest drawback is the noise level. It is exceptionally loud inside, even for a busy dim sum hall. If you’re looking for a quiet place to catch up with friends, this might not be it—you’ll likely find yourself shouting over the table.
As for the service, it’s typical for a high-volume Chinese dim sum spot: fast-paced, functional, and no-nonsense. Don’t expect a lot of “service with a smile,” but they get the food to the table efficiently.
The owner is very kind and knows me by name. Also the servers are friendly to me and my friends. I give them a wonderful tip.
Come early to get free parking spot and discount for dim sum (limited conditions applied)
