I’ve eaten here a few times in 2024 and 2025. Food has been excellent each time I visited, and I’ve had the following different items on the menu: All-star burger, MVP burger, fries, poutine, wings.
The burgers have that charbroiled taste, and you can customize them the toppings the way you like. I brought some friends with me on my last visit, and they all enjoyed their meal as well.
A all-star burger, fries and a pop will cost around $20. Very decent when compared to a signature burger combo at mainstream fast food chain which will set you back around $15 these days.
One personal observation and kudos from me to the owners of Golden Star. On a couple of my recent visits, I noticed a neurodivergent gentleman working behind the counter and in the lobby area. I thought they did a great job assisting customers and fellow co-workers. It was nice to see. They not only put out a good food, but positive employment practices as well.
I ordered their classic hamburger that everyone talks about, with fries and a soft drink. I could barely taste the grilled flavor of the meat, and with every bite I tried to pull that flavor out, but it just wasn’t easy — so I can say it wasn’t anything special. I’ve definitely had much better burgers. The fries were crispy, but again, nothing special. As for the drink served in a cup, it didn’t even taste quite like Coca-Cola; you knew it was Coke, but it still felt like something was missing.
Overall, I’m glad I tried it this time — now I know I won’t be thinking about going back.
We ordered two homemade All Star Burgers ($9.95 each), sweet potato fries ($5.95), and a mocha cappuccino milkshake ($5.45). The burger features a 6oz patty and offers a variety of toppings, some of which come with an extra charge; we added cheese for an additional $1. There are also several complimentary toppings available, including tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, mayonnaise, homemade BBQ sauce, fried onions, pickles, homemade spicy habanero sauce, hot sauce, hot peppers, mustard, and relish. The burger was decent, but I found the sweet potato fries to be just average. Given the overall cost, I’m not sure I would return, as I feel the prices are a bit high.
There’s a reason this Thornhill stalwart is still going strong even with the neighborhood changing quite a bit, family run, and always friendly.
The burgers themselves are top notch. Every. Single. Time.
And the beef gravy for the fries is a must for me.
I ordered a bacon cheeseburger combo with a drink and side poutine for $22 which isn’t the worst in this day and age.
The burger was great, decent char on it and well seasoned; as good as I remember when I was younger. The poutine was solid too; it was a big portion with plenty of cheese curds and gravy that wasn’t too salty.
I’m happy Golden Star is still around, with many older establishments falling by the wayside. Hopefully it sticks around for a few more decades.
Rings and fries were good also, but burger was great. Had the habanero sauce (good), but kinda wish I didn’t as it took a little away from the flavor. Will have the pepper rings next time. Don’t take Visa, heads up
The burger was exactly what we were hoping for. The patty had a nice crisp on the outside but was juicy. The ability to choose our own toppings was great as well!
The poutine was a good portion size and they do not skimp on the gravy or cheese! There was an abundance and hit all the right buttons. Will definitely be coming back in the future!
