Ok folks, looking at the restaurant from the outside it may not look like much. The seating is dated but the service and food have caused me to return.

My favorite is the hot and sour soup. It takes 40 minutes to prepare as it is FRESH made, so we learned to call ahead before we come to eat.

Be prepared to take some food home!

Stop by if you love Chinese food. You will not regret it.

Excellent food!!!… and a great owner!
I got off work early, and I called in a to-go order for us (Chicken Fried Rice & Sweet & Sour Pork) and he made sure it was ready for me to pick up on my way home.
Next time I’ll branch out, but the fried rice and sweet and sour were REALLY good.

If you want a cheap affordable food for a big family portions yes this is your place. It’s a okay location for a date or two people to come. If your extremely hungry and want to eat good tasty variety food then come for buffet hours and if you are going to come as a small group share your plates. I believe they are very tasty with chicken anything that has to do with chicken that’s there specialty, beef they are okay it’s taste like something but it’s not the touch of taste. From soups the egg drop is so good. Egg rolls aren’t your usual kind size they are big enough for an appetizer. Price is manageable and location it’s as it was bought. It’s clean it’s friendly it’s gentle and good enough to eat.

After reading several great reviews, I decided to give Golden Gate Chinese in Tulsa, OK, a try. This review is a tough one to write because Mary and her staff were incredibly friendly, and they’ve been running this restaurant for 45 years—an impressive feat. However, I have to be honest: this was some of the most disappointing Chinese food I’ve had in a long time.

The experience started off on the wrong foot when they opened 15 minutes late, with staff casually strolling in from the parking lot to get things going. Inside, the restaurant felt unprepared for the afternoon rush and was noticeably cold. Mary greeted me warmly and took my drink order promptly, but the menu she provided was well-worn, with prices crossed out and rewritten by hand—an unprofessional touch that didn’t inspire confidence.

While waiting outside, a customer enthusiastically recommended their famous large egg rolls, calling them “the best he’s ever had,” so I ordered them along with their well-known oversized crab cheese wontons. Based on reviews, I also went with the General Tso’s Chicken and fried rice, as it had been highly praised.

The appetizers arrived quickly—within 10 minutes—and looked promising. Mary even warned me they were extremely hot. Unfortunately, both the egg rolls and wontons were lukewarm in the center, which was disappointing. The egg rolls lacked seasoning and fell flat in terms of flavor, while the crab cheese wontons were decent but would have been much better if properly heated.

Then came the General Tso’s Chicken and fried rice. Visually, neither dish looked very appetizing, and the first bite confirmed my concerns. The sauce on the chicken had an odd, thin consistency, almost like fish sauce, and tasted off. The fried rice was just plain rice—no peas, carrots, onions, or even egg, which is standard in most places.

I left quite disappointed and genuinely puzzled by the glowing reviews and the customer outside who swore by the egg rolls. Maybe it’s a matter of expectations—having experienced fantastic Chinese food in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Phoenix, and Honolulu, I couldn’t help but feel that Golden Gate fell far short. Perhaps locals who love it haven’t had the chance to experience truly great Chinese cuisine.

Unfortunately, this is one place I won’t be returning to.

If I could give this place more than five stars, I would. Brandon and his wife are absolutely lovely, and their food is truly the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. It’s a total hole-in-the-wall spot — but in the BEST possible way. Their General Tso’s is unbeatable, the egg rolls are perfect every single time, and the hot and sour soup is hands-down the best I’ve ever tasted.

I moved out of Tulsa years ago, and I still haven’t found anything that comes close. I literally crave their food, and every time I’m back visiting family, this is the first place I go. They even remember us, which makes it feel like coming home. A true gem!

Brandon the owner is amazing! Lunch all you can eat for $9.99 is hard to beat. Start with egg drop soup or chicken & rice soup. Then he brings out a plate of an assortment of different foods. Then you tell him which ones you liked and he brings you more if that. So good. Amazing service. Love the charm of the place. Big portions more than plenty to eat. Also food is so piping hot almost burned my mouth multiple times but would much rather have that than Luke warm or cold old food.

I finally had the opportunity to try Golden Gate. I chose to eat there, as I live a good 30-35 minutes away.
I really enjoyed my meal: sweet and sour pork with garlic shrimp dinner combo. The egg roll was huge compared to what I’m used to getting elsewhere, the vegetables in the garlic shrimp were fresh, and – no joke – there had to have been 40 decent-sized shrimp! The breading on the pork was “just right” – not too thick, not too greasy. The rice was pretty basic, but that’s how I like it if it’s a side – I can add some rice in the saucy bites of shrimp or pork, and for me, it hits the spot!
Needless to say, I brought home leftovers, which I enjoyed the next day!
Brandon and I chatted a bit – such a nice man! I mentioned how I missed my little local Chinese restaurant back in California, and Brandon piped up with, “Oh, I used to live in California, too – West Covina!” I told him how much I enjoyed the meal, and tucked back in as he returned to the counter, taking numerous orders over the phone.
I watched the amiable exchanges between several “regulars” who stopped by to order and pick up “to-go.” I love that “Cheers” feeling at a little restaurant (where everybody knows your name….!).
It’s not a fancy place, but the food was really good and the atmosphere of people happy to be there, the warm reception from Brandon…well, they’ve got a new “regular” customer – me!
