Absolutely amazing date night! My partner and I loved the atmosphere and the bar seating, we got to chat with our neighbors and it was really fun and inviting. We love watching the chefs do their thing and asking a million questions, and everyone was so sweet! Our serving Liz was very knowledgeable and friendly too, thanks Liz! I appreciated that they had non-alcoholic drinks, I got the Golden Koi, mango shave ice with chili crisp, it was delicious and the perfect salty-sweet starter. My partner got an incredible old fashioned with a custom stamped ice cube. We also got the edamame, miso soup, nigiri plat, chu-toro, and kara-age. We would highly recommend the chu-toro and miso soup. We ended with the chocolate soy brownie which was a delicious mix of caramel, chocolate, cream, and the freeze dried ice cream was such a fun texture. I have yet to see caramelized white chocolate in a dessert in Pittsburgh yet, and it complimented the flavors so well. Can’t recommend this place enough to couples looking for a nice date, families looking to celebrate, or individuals who want to have a good night out

Golden Gai is a trendy little Japanese restaurant with really cool vibes. You sit in a long room in an area that overlooks the kitchen and bar area and the staff interact with you! It’s a little hard to talk to your friends if you have a party of four as you are sitting at a bar. Let’s start with the bar, they have an extensive drink menu with some unique drinks, yet you can still have a traditional mixed drink. I ordered a Byujin which was very light and refreshing. Moving on to the food, the menu is modest, but still a nice selection of tapas style Japanese plates. The sushi looked great, but I chose the fish bowl over rice. It was a nice portion size with fresh fish, an excellent choice! I also ordered the udon noodle dish that had chicken and mushrooms and shared this dish. It too was a nice portion size, but seemed quite salty. The food is definitely pricey. Overall, a wonderful place to eat, great service, friendly staff and quality food! I would definitely go back!

The food is absolutely incredible! Service is spot on with focus on menu knowledge. Drink menu is delightful and something for absolutely everyone. Couldn’t do the fifth star because their hood vents were dirty

Golden Gai in Bakery Square was a fantastic experience. The mood was spot on—warm, dark, and just the right level of energy. The drinks were excellent.
We opted to share plates as they arrived, which kept the meal flowing at a comfortable pace. It was about a two-hour experience, but we were never stuck waiting too long or without food. Everything felt natural and well-timed.
The overall vibe, service, and food quality made for a great night out. Would definitely return.

I’ve been here 4 times since I tried it, and I will probably come back for every special occasion. This is my favorite restaurant probably anywhere. The yellowtail is amazing, the specials are always fantastic, and the Tokyo street noodles I got most recently was one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten anywhere. The kale was crispy, the pork belly melted in my mouth and had a nice char, and the noodles were the perfect texture. The service and the atmosphere is amazing, everyone is so nice, and seeing the food being made on the other side of the counter is cool. I love this place.

Visited Golden Gai in March for my husband’s birthday. While we loved the food, the service left something to be desired. We ordered the Kari Kuri, Spicy Tuna Rice Cake, Yakimeshi, Yaki Wagyu Satsumaimo, and the Yaki Udon. The helpings were generous and delicious. I loved the tuna dish and my husband loved the Udon. The wagyu dish was unbelievably flavorful. The beef was tender with a delicious sauce and perfectly crispy potatoes.
Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll visit again. We felt very talked down to by our waiter. By the various comments he made throughout the dinner, I felt that we weren’t his usual clientele and made to feel dumb. We like to splurge every few months on a nice dinner out, we’re not unaccustomed to upscale dining. For the price, I would prefer not to feel unwelcome.

This was my first time ordering food from this restaurant and the portion is not fit for a five year old. The flavor and taste is awesome but for the price it’s not worth it… I won’t be back. Serve adult portions please and this was a large plate not a small plate.

I picked up Golden Gai a few months ago, and it was pretty good! It closed earlier than I expected, but the presentation was amazing for takeout sushi. The miso soup was incredible, and I really liked the chef’s choice rolls I got. I really wish there was a little card that told me what I was eating, but I was able to sleuth it out from the website. All the fish was really high quality, delicious, and the dish you’re given makes it easy to eat wherever you are. However, the sauces didn’t really make sense to me, and I really would have liked to know what the chef choice was without looking it up. Looking forward to eating in the restaurant sometime soon!
