Whenever my sister swings by the 99 Ranch Market in Rowland Heights, she always passes by Golden China, a little Sichuan spot inside and this time we decided to bring our parents along to check it out.

They’ve got lunch specials, around $13 a dish. Portions are solid, and you can see what we ordered in the photos. Flavor-wise, it’s on the heavier side, pretty salty and oily in my opinion, but the auntie (seems to be the owner) was friendly, chatty vibe.

If you’re shopping at 99 Ranch and craving Sichuan, this is a handy spot to pop in!

It’s conveniently located inside 99 Ranch Market Mall, so I decided to give it a try this morning after I finished my grocery shopping.

I asked the lady, who might be the owner, if they had steamed fish fillet. She said they did not have fish fillet but tilapia ONLY, so I trusted her and gave it a try. While waiting, I asked her for the menus, then saw in the menu that they had fish fillet with black bean sauce, fish fillet with vegetables, and a lunch special steamed fish fillet for $12.95. I asked her why she said they didn’t have it, and she rudely told me, “Next time, okay?!” When my order was finally done after half an hour and I took it home, the extremely hot sauce seeped through the very thin bag and spilled all over my car seat. More disappointing is that the steamed tilapia I paid for $22 was not even fresh, and looked rotten with dark colored bones (not off white, not yellowish, nor brown). In general, the service is bad and dishonest, and the food is so terrible that I had to throw away almost the entire fish.

I wasn’t the only one who had bad luck this morning! While waiting, there was a man who dashed in and ordered a soup to go. The same lady tried to push him away by telling him that they didn’t have the soup he wanted, so he left. There was another couple who came in after that. The woman ordered something, but again, the owner said they didn’t have it. The customer insisted that they had the photos posted outside the glass window, but the owner still denied having it, so they had to order something else which was more expensive!

Is that how this restaurant is run?

Food: 4*
Service: 5*
Ambiance: 3*

Location: Inside the same entrance hall as the 99 ranch market. No signage 7ntil you get inside the door on the immediate right.

Enjoyed dinner here with some extended family. For the 6 of us we ordered a variety of dishes:

Hot Sour Soup (5*) – hot and peppery like you want it
Orange Peel Chicken (4*) – not as sweet as others and more crispy, it was well flavored and tasty
Kung Pao Beef (4*) – very flavorful and the beef was tender and juicy
Fish Fillet with tofu in spicy sauce (5*) – just delicious, well seasoned slightly spicy and a recommend from the owner
String Bean With Ground Pork (5*) – sautéed string beans with a little pork, but with the breath of the wok so it was Smokey. Great.
Kung Pao Shrimp (4*) – good, shrimp were flavorful but overdone
Steamed Dumpling 8 (4*) – good, but not great
Fried noodle with chicken (4*) – think chow mein, it was good
Diced Chicken In Spicy Sauce (5*) – a must try for chile lovers! Crispy fried chicken pieces with red chilies and Szechwan peppercorns. The mala sensation combination was fantastic.

The service was fast, friendly and helpful. The owner lady was very helpful to recommend dishes. She suggested the fish filet and dried chicken and they were the standouts! The ambiance is dated, but clean. I would return here again.

We came here on Christmas Day from Brea. Absolutely incredible and delicious food. My wife and I had the chicken chop suey, orange peel chicken, cumin Lamb and the Lobster with noodle. The owner is such a nice lady! Highly recommended!!!!

TL;DR
Would recommend this place if you are looking for a Chinese restaurant with delicious options and your party has people with various dietary choices.

This place is AWESOME. Due note that I’m writing from a position that whenever I go out to eat, I have to keep in mind the vegetarian, vegan, and meat options.

They said they can provide MORE vegetarian/vegan options if you call ahead and let them know. I haven’t done this and each time I went in, they’ve been able to make at least 4-5 vegan dishes. So good, I always have to take leftovers home.

They might not promote themselves as a vegan/vegetarian restaurant but the head chef used to work for a vegetarian restaurant for almost a decade so he has tons of experience.

Now that Supreme Dragon and J & J shut down, this is the best (or least bad) place for xlb and Shanghai chow nin go in SoCal (eff Din Tai Fung, they’re not even Shanghainese). The ladies are super nice but maybe just to me as I’ve been coming here for years. They’re closed insanely early though.
