It all started in 1949 when Grandpa Izzy (who emigrated from Poland in 1937) opened a wholesale bagel store in the Bronx, NY. All four of his sons worked there, learning the trade. One of his sons, Artie Goldberg, opened a bagel store in Westwood, NJ in 1965. For years, the family worked seven days a week in the store, including Barbara Goldberg – who is now 92 years old!!! – as well as Terry, Marc, and Howie – his kids. Fast forward to today, and the family still runs the Westwood store, as well as many others in NJ, NY, and PA. Now in its fourth generation, you’ll find Terry’s kids – Stacey, Eric, Heather, and Adam – as well as Marc’s daughter Amanda, and Howie’s daughter Ivy – working for the family business. I ordered a toasted croissant, and this is how it came out—flat, unappetizing, and nothing close to what you’d expect for the price. On top of that, the $16 lox, cucumber, and onion bagel I ordered barely had two ounces of lox, plus stale chips on the side. I even asked that the lox be sliced thin and portioned enough for a proper meal, but what I got was underwhelming at best.
The parking is terrible, the staff rarely greet you, and while the owners sit comfortably chatting over coffee, customers are left paying premium prices for declining quality. Portions keep shrinking, prices keep climbing—and somehow we’re expected to accept it.
I have seen some of the reviews, and you just can’t please some people. We had a party of 4, all getting breakfast sandwiches on bagels. They were all stacked with egg, bacon, and whatever twist made that sandwich unique. The lox & cream cheese with capers was legit and piled with lox.
When we are back visiting family, we are 100% coming here again.
Bagels are burnt, toppings are incorrect, and regardless of how busy they are, they will take 25 minutes every visit.
Will not be returning.
I wanted to surprise my niece and nephew with breakfast this morning (she’s about to celebrate her birthday and loves her rainbow bagel with strawberry cream cheese), so I placed an order through Grubhub. I even added two different cream cheeses to make it extra special.
Unfortunately, no chocolate chip bagel. And only one cream cheese made it into the order. I called, was told the manager would call me back—but no one ever did.
I was trying to create a fun morning for the kids and ended up disappointed. Mistakes happen, but when people go out of their way based on what’s advertised, it’s important to deliver—or at least follow up.
Just not worth it when there’s other places locally now that are just as good and don’t give you tiny bagels for a premium price.
