We stopped here to try the famous garlic shrimp. Line wasn’t too bad Cool vibe lots of reggae in the air. Shrimp was tasty, very garlicky but peel on. Definitely get the hot sauce. Good portions. Beautiful day in Halewia

Parking Strategy:
The Lot: We paid the $2 (cash only) to park in the lot right next to the trucks. It’s worth it for the convenience.
Alternative: You can park at the nearby mall/shopping center and walk if you want to save the money, but be prepared for the walk.
The Food:
We ordered menu items #1 (Scampi/Garlic) and #3 (Lemon Butter).
Speed: Service was fast enough to get our food and enjoy it without a huge wait.
The Taste: The Garlic Scampi (#1) is the winner—we really enjoyed it.
Payment: Good news: They are taking credit cards now (it used to be cash only).
Important Logistics:
Seating Rules: Pay attention to the signs on the picnic tables. The tables are separate/assigned for each specific truck, so make sure you sit in Giovanni’s section.
Facilities: Be warned: There is no bathroom here at all. Plan accordingly!
Verdict:
The garlic shrimp lives up to the hype. Just bring $2 cash for parking and use the restroom before you arrive.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck on the North Shore is one of those places you hear about nonstop so expectations are naturally high. Parking is $2 and the lot fills up fast so timing matters. There are plenty of other food trucks nearby which adds to the busy fun atmosphere and makes it feel like a full food stop instead of just one truck.

Each plate runs $17.50 and comes on a basic paper plate with two scoops of rice and about ten shrimp. It is simple no frills and very much about the shrimp. Unfortunately the garlic was not very crispy and the overall flavor did not live up to the hype. It was fine but nothing memorable and definitely not crave worthy.

For two people the total came out to $35 and walking away I could not help but feel a little underwhelmed. I have honestly made better garlic shrimp at home which made it harder to understand the long lines and legendary reputation.

Giovanni’s is iconic and worth trying once if you are curious but for the price and the hype it did not win me over. Come for the experience if you want but manage expectations and maybe check out some of the other trucks nearby while you are there.

Here’s a short, punchy English review that works well for Google Maps

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck
Super tasty garlic shrimp — juicy, flavorful, and absolutely worth the stop.
Fast service, big portions, and convenient parking nearby.
Simple street-food vibe, but the food really delivers.
Highly recommended if you’re in Honolulu and want a quick, iconic local bite.

Good food. Decent value for the price $17.50. The lemon butter is great. The garlic is also amazing. The hot and spicy is ok but the sauce is not the greatest. Overwhelmingly spicy with no actual flavor. So not worth it to me. The place so super crowded and lines cane be long at times but it moves quite quickly.

Best shrimp I’ve ever had. Garlic scampi that was juicy and fresh. Came with a side of hot sauce that was pretty hot but great as a dip. Delicious. Would eat this every time I go to North shore! Staff are friendly and service is fast. In a cute food truck parking lot. Line goes quickly. The soda truck is great. Lots of tables. Get here early and enjoy!

the garlic scampi (#1) had great flavor and was a fun dining experience. prices were a little expensive for what it is, especially since it’s not made-to-order.

parking area was $2 cash and seating area was packed with quick turnaround. the local chickens will try to steal your food!

Was not impressed with this stop. Made the run up North shore based on reviews.
What to expect-
Pay to park- which is normal and almost convenient to be honest.

12 shrimp- if you order Hot make sure to get a drink cause its not a good/tasty hot just hot- with 2 scoops of rice.

12 shrimp- sautéed-( most popular) expect an average shrimp with 2 scoops of rice.
Expect to pay $17-20 a plate.
I would rate a 3/10 tops.
Not sure why it has so many high reviews other then the experience aspect.

You go because it’s the thing to do. Don’t expect a gourmet experience, go for the experience.

We both had the spicy scampi.

The service was outgoing and friendly.

I understand why they don’t peel the shrimp, as it’s labor intensive and most tourists will willingly do it, but if it’s your first time peeling shrimp you’re going to get the garlic butter all over your shorts and t-shirt and, well, hey you’re on vacation. Who really cares?

Pro tip: Bring hand wipes.

Another pro tip: Try the other shrimp cart nearby (you may like it better).
