First time EVER having Chicago deep dish and I see why this is so famous! That pizza was absolutely delicious and this place in particular has a very cool vibe and for something so popular is very affordable! Our server Chia was also fantastic and extremely helpful with recommendations as well as just super kind making this feel like an amazing and comforting experience. One of my favorite dining experiences I’ve had in a long time and I definitely see why this is a must stop for Chicago visitors

Surprising Meatballs, but the Bread Couldn’t Handle the Heat

I originally came to Gino’s East on a recommendation to try their famous deep-dish pizza; I certainly didn’t want to leave Chicago without tasting one of the city’s most iconic dishes. However, once I arrived, I realized their signature pies are designed for 2–3 people and require at least 45 minutes to cook. Since I was in my final hour in the city and traveling solo—with no way to take leftovers on a plane—I pivoted and settled on the meatball sub instead.

I almost never order meatballs or a meatball sub at a restaurant. I make a pretty mean meatball at home, and I usually don’t have much confidence that a restaurant’s version will measure up. However, Gino’s meatballs were rich, flavorful, and moist, with a distinct Italian seasoning that was perfectly executed. I was very happy to find such high-quality meatballs, which came served with a side of French fries.

The “Structural” Issue My only real complaint is that the bread was quite lumpy and wet. While the tomato sauce was excellent, the bread simply couldn’t stand up to it. I found myself wondering why the bread isn’t made more resilient—perhaps toasted longer or even slightly charred—so it can hold its shape before dissolving into a wet dough by the time it reaches the table.

I tried “998 different ways” to hold the sandwich together, but it was impossible; the bread crumbled and the meatballs fell out with every attempt at a bite. I eventually had to ask for a fork to finish my meal. While the taste was great, a sub you can’t actually pick up is a bit of a disappointment.

Our experience this evening at Gino’s was 10/10!! We’re visiting Chicago from out of town and had been recommended Gino’s by an acquaintance. It certainly didn’t disappoint! The deep dish and garlic bread were incredible and the atmosphere was very laid back and enjoyable. Blake was our server and he was extremely personable and such a joy to talk to! If we’re ever back in the city, we’ll definitely be back here!

My wife and I were visiting Chicago for a few days to celebrate her birthday and in pound Gino’s East through a Gemini recommendation!
The atmosphere is awesome, take time to look through the pictures on the walls up upstairs with all the celebrities and their notes. This is a great stop!
The food was delicious and very filling!
We ordered the sampler appetizer, highly recommend mozzarella sticks with ranch, very unique and delicious taste.
We have the four meat, deep dish, pizza, another hits. It was topped off with the birthday brownie pan!
And the service, top-notch!
Yana was so friendly and helpful, and just made the experience even better than it already was!
Thank you for a great experience for these visitors!

Excellent food and service! We have been several times and it’s always fantastic. We love the Chicago fire deep dish. The spicy kale ceasar was delicous as well. Yana, our server was the friendliest person we met while in Chicago. Thank you Yana and Ginos east!

We were picking between multiple deep dish places and wanted to give Gino’s a try, and we loved it! Our server was super friendly, the decor was very cool, and the food was delicious. Always prepare for a 45min bake for the deep dish pizza, so we ordered two salads to share, we got the kale Caesar and the harvest salad, both were good but the kale Caesar was amazing, and I’m still craving it. For pizza we got the spinach margherita (which was everyone’s favorite), Gino’s supreme (2nd favorite), and meaty legend. I like that you can do half and half to try multiple flavors. The crust was fabulous- it had great texture and flavor, and the sauce was great too.

Of all the deep dish I tried while in Chicago, Gino’s East was the clear winner. We went with a half-and-half pizza to try different flavors, and it was absolutely incredible. The crust is legendary for a reason, but the flavor of the toppings and sauce really set it apart. It was easily the most flavorful meal of our trip—don’t bother going anywhere else if you want the authentic superior experience!

Our first time back since the rebuild. Brighter and more spacious feeling, with much of the vibe preserved. (Graffiti & soundtrack). Our small group shared “the Italian special” deep dish pizza. Delicious and the gardeniera provided surprising spiciness! While waiting for our pie, we shared a large harvest salad, chock-full of apple bits, candied walnuts, cheese, lettuce, dried fruit and tasty dressing. Our server, Mike, was super friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was just right.

Reuben R was our server and he was super attentive and kind, just outstanding. The pizza was everything Chicago and was perfect. The sauce had about 12 levels of flavor, and the quality of the meat was very evident. Just a great experience overall.

When I said make the pizza well done they weren’t playing. They cooked that crust like a caveman who just discovered fire. Look at that there crust! It looks like it was touched by the sun itself. The roast beef was nice and moist just like I like my schmeat. I wish they put the salad dressing on the side but that’s okay it tasted good. Overall good experience, one star off for the crust.
