The iconic Gingerbread House Bakery and Pizza in Frisco, NC has been a Hatteras Island staple for 50 years.

My first visit to the Gingerbread House was in 1991 on a family vacation. It was so good, we had it for dinner for four of our six nights. Visited again in 1999, 2019, and 2021. Best pizza anywhere.
We came back this past week with the new owners. It’s not the same.
To be clear, the staff are amazing, both on the phone and in person. Prices are also very competitive in relation to other spots nearby.
But the pizza isn’t the fluffy, flavorful pizza I’ve enjoyed over the past decades. It’s now a thin, New York style pizza, where the sauce, the cheese, and the crust are all mingled together in one thin layer. The sauce is slightly sweet (and good), the cheese is flavorful, but the original crust is gone. Even at the edges, the crust doesn’t have any real flavor on its own.
Change can be a good thing, but in this case, I miss the original. I wish the new owners the best of luck in developing with new clientele.

We wanted to LOVE this place. We have been coming to the OBX for over 50 years. Have always wanted to try this place! What we experienced fell far short of that. We stood on the porch and waited for our pizza and they FORGOT we were there and looked at us like they thought WE were nuts. WE WERE THE ONLY CUSTOMERS THERE!! We still cannot wrap our heads around the visit. Cookies and pizza all went in the trash. Worst cookies and pizza. Freschetta and store bought cookies would have been a much better option! Perhaps an off night? Will not get a second chance to under WOW us!

Great place we stopped at while staying in Frisco. When we stopped by it wasn’t quiet opening time yet, but the open sign looked lit up. The doors were locked, but the name gentleman came and opened the door and let us in. We were able to buy some eclaries and gingerbread. The guy told us all about how they used clean ingredients and was so nice and patient with us. When we got back to our house, we partook of our sweets. The gingerbread was the star. The texture and taste was so good. Don’t miss out on adding the lemon sauce. Dipping the gingerbread in the lemon sauce was so good and much better than it sounded. We want to go back sometime and try their pizza. It was great how someone seemed to take pride in how their food was made. This was a great stop while vacationing in Frsico.

We have been coming here for years, and with the recent change in ownership I’ve been mindful to keep an eye out for changes. Well I’d say it’s nothing but good changes so far! The pizza is, dare I say, better. We got the bbq, a half cheese half pepperoni, and the east coast. Very good! Highly recommend. For those 3 large pizzas it was about $75 total with tax.
I have never been inclined to get the bakery items. I remember I had a few under the old ownership and I was never impressed. I think they’re currently in a re branding phase. They have breakfast sandwiches in the morning hours, they have lunch hours as well. Previously they just had dinner hours. They also had printed out menus with the titles “Hatteras island pizza”, so I don’t know.

Absolutely SUPERB pizza and baked goods that are fresh and expertly made. Host was super friendly and personable. Nice, quaint, small-town local atmosphere. If you are like us and prefer quality food and a warm, genuine welcome over an overpriced, upscale dining excursion, then this is your place. It is now one of our must-visit local spots!

Don’t miss stopping here! The owner only uses high quality, fresh ingredients. The Margharita pizza is to die for. Sincerely. Place is hopping busy because the pizza and baked goods are out of this world delicious. The owner is very interesting to chat with. Cool guy, world traveler foodie extraordinaire. We will always stop here when we visit Hatteras. Best pizza/bakery in the OBX!

My husband and I stopped in on a whim the other night. We ordered the BBQ pizza, 2 cannolis, and a brownie. They focus on the ingredients here and you can really tell with how it tastes. Everything was made fresh in house. The service was amazing and everyone here was friendly. I highly recommend you make a stop here!

We ate here twice on vacation this past week! Once dine-in, second pickup. Both times the pizza was phenomenal. We love a good pizza and they did not disappoint. The freshness of their ingredients shined through each time. Also loved they had a chicken tender option for my picky eater daughter. If you are in the area definitely give them a try! We will be back next year!

Great pizza as always. Little slow this time taking almost 90 minutes for pizza and fries. But I will tell you, these guys were working hard. When I walked in there was a big table full 4 more families walked in after us for take out and the phone kept ringing. All that being said, great pizza and worth the wait. Just call ahead and order earlier than you want your pizza!
