The food was delicious, and they put a lot of meat in the sandwich. In addition, everyone was kind, and you could choose exactly how you wanted to build your sandwich.

We are not locals but Rutland is a standard lunch spot for us on our way to the Vermont North Country.
What a great find. We ordered subs (Veggie) and all ingredients, including the sub roll, were fresh and delicious. Our sub “artist” carefully constructed our subs while we waited.
We also tried the deviled eggs and macaroni salad which we found to be bland and underwhelming.
Despite the latter; the excellent subs and service mean that Gill’s is our new stop from now on!

The Best Subs, Grinders whatever you want to call them around! Just remember they use shredded cabbage so if you want lettuce please request it. Have never been disappointed.

Well I guess all good things must come to an end! We have been Gills fans for years but after our last order not sure we will be back. We ordered 5 subs to take with us for late night NYE celebration. We asked for the pickles on the side so that the bread wouldn’t get soggy to which they responded that because we asked that they had to charge a catering fee which we didn’t complain about. When I picked up the order, the tiny little tub of pickles didn’t seem like it was going to be enough so I asked for a few more to which I got a lot of pushback because “we count exactly how many pickles are on each sub and that’s enough“. $80 for five subs and they gave pushback about a few more pickles? And not to mention they got the order completely wrong and I had called the day before because I knew it would be a busy one for them so it’s not to add pressure. Also the push back was AFTER I tipped very generously! So very disappointed.

I have visited Gill’s Delicatessen twice now and I have been a satisfied diner on both occasions. This unpretentious establishment does what it does well and has no need to pretend to be anything else. The dining space is comfortable, but in an expected style. The breads, Sandwich filling (meats or veggies), garnish options, side dishes, and desserts will satisfy your tastes. Let them know what you want and let them craft a sandwich, grinder, or special order for you. A good meal at a reasonable price.

I was hoping when you changed hands that you would change the chicken salad. It’s so over chopped that it’s mush that won’t stay on the bun while you eat it.
Been getting chicken salad sandwiches for decades, please for love of chicken salad lovers, make real chicken salad! Chunks of chicken, celery, mayo and herbs. Every other deli manages to make it.
Everything else is great, and has been.
Please fix this one item so it’s on par with the rest of your offerings.

The subs here are the best in town but recently we ordered two subs. The Turkey sub had two slices of turkey on a large sub while the other had plenty. This was the second time this happened with the turkey sub. Except this time we asked and paid for extra turkey. It’s also very unfortunate you guys cant deliver and there is still not even an option to pay online at the very least to avoid the long lines.

This is not the Gills I grew up with….Sad….. I understand there are new owners now? Won’t be long if they keep serving these Jerseys Mikes reject grinders. Everything is off, cabbage is not sweet anymore, the mystery meat that was supposed to be turkey was piled high, which is great cuz my dogs were hungry. Cheese is not the same, bread looks the same, but don’t be deceived, it taste bland and was somehow soggy even with the grinder being dry….. This is an impressive feat and I’m sure will be on an episode of how it’s made in the near future. I use to be willing to go on 2 hour one way drives to grab one of these grinders, no more.

Nowhere else can I find shredded cabbage. Thank you Gills for making the best grinders in, well….the world!

I picked up a takeout order this evening I had called in on the way home from work. For some reason a cold grinder was wrapped in foil, not wax paper. There was mayo smeared all over the foil, the cabbage I had substituted for lettuce was wrapped into every fold of the foil and spilled everywhere, there are three slices of tomatoes, probably two pounds of lettuce and six pieces of bacon on my BLT. Most of the mayo was on the foil, no oil or salt and pepper like I asked for. This used to be the best deli around but the new owners are running this place into the ground. I’ll choose Subway over Gills next time.
