Well-known chowder house has a dinerlike interior & a patio overlooking Custom House Wharf.

Their food was delicious!! I ordered half Lobster BLT with clam chowder. First off offering half sandwich/soup is the perfect portion size. When I tell you the clam chowder is on point, not too thick, not too thin and good flavor. The sandwich absolutely delicious. The bread is toasted perfectly, the bacon was nice and crispy which paired so well with the lobster. Which they do not skimp on their lobster portions, there was lobster in every bite. Highly recommend trying this spot out. My waitress was great, checked on my a few times and was friendly 🙂

Gilberts never disappoints. This is always our first stop when we visit Portland. The food is to die for. I especially recommend the super seafood chowder. Service is very quick. We received our food in less than 10 minutes of ordering and it was hot and fresh. The blueberry pie for dessert was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

Gilbert’s Chowder House feelt like a true Portland staple — very local, no frills, and exactly what you hope for when you’re looking for great seafood. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the food was fantastic across the board.
The (haddock) chowder was outstanding — rich, homemade, and full of flavor. We were told the lobsters were caught and brought in from the boat that morning, which absolutely showed in the freshness in the Lobster BLT.
We believe we even met the owner (not positive!), who was clearly passionate about both the food, the people and the place itself, and that energy carried through the whole experience.
Highly recommend getting ANY of the chowders in the bread bowl. So so good.

The food at Gilbert’s Chowder House is AMAZING!!! The photo is of my kids meal which was outstanding. Crisp and light fries and the seafood chowder so delicious. This is the best chowder ever! Worth checking out indeed. Onion rings and fish and chips great as well. Our server Amanda was friendly, attentive and told us what specials were going on at the time. Highly recommend Gilbert’s!!!

Popular chowder house right on the pier.
Last time I was in Portland, this place was packed with lines outside. It’s smack in the middle of the tourist zone, but I hadn’t had a proper Maine chowder yet, so I was excited to see what the hype was about.
The place was eerily empty when we came in around Sunday noon, so we opted for takeout. We ordered three different chowders (clam, super seafood, and cod) plus a side of clam cakes. Honestly, none of them really slapped.
I know Maine food tends to be milder than what I’m used to in Boston, but here, that mildness just felt bland. The Super Seafood Chowder was especially disappointing. It was loaded with a boatload of protein, but the seafood itself felt completely drained of its natural juices, like it was just there for texture rather than flavor. Worse, I couldn’t really taste a difference between the three chowder bases.
Maybe this isn’t a fair representation of chowders in Portland, but I think I’ll stick to my usual spots in MA.

Coziest little spot. Excellent fried seafood, sandwiches, and chowder! Seafood chowder is packed full of clams, haddock, shrimp, and chunks of fresh lobster. You can get all chowders in a bread bowl. Excellent selection of local beers on tap. Best spot year round for lunch or a snack in the old port.

Gilbert’s Chowder House is absolutely amazing! I had the lobster roll — packed full of fresh, tender lobster — and the seafood chowder, which was loaded with lobster, shrimp, and haddock. Every bite was rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Honestly, the best chowder I’ve ever eaten!
And I have to mention our server, Amanda — she was the most amazing server I’ve ever had! Friendly, attentive, and made our dining experience even better. Highly recommend this place!

Ordered the seafood chili in a bread bowl. It was not very warm and somewhat disappointing. I asked the server to heat it up and they did. Food was good just not hot. Daughter had the chowder and same issue. Onion rings were fresh made and good.

Very busy place with great food. Gilbert’s has one of the best clam chowders that I’ve ever had. Large selection of seafood sishes and like 5 different chowders. It would have been awesome if they offered a flight of chowders so you could easily try them all. The only thing I didn’t care dor was the clam cake. The rest of the food was amazing.
