A helpful tip for first-timers: you don’t need tickets to enter. It’s an open part of the town that you can freely walk around and explore.
I went for their World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae, and while it felt like a week’s worth of calories, it was so incredibly good that I have zero regrets. It’s a must-try. The staff are also really helpful if you’re looking for gifts to take home, and they let you sample some of the chocolates while you shop.
For a fun and delicious experience that’s more than just a dessert stop, this place is fantastic. It’s a quintessential San Francisco treat.
That being said, we did have a small hot fudge sundae, and enjoyed walking around the complex with eclectic shops and posh restaurants.
There is a parking garage in the bottom of the complex. If you go during the week (M-Th), they will validate parking. We were there on a Friday, so we paid the $18 for 3 hours.
The sundaes were very indulgent — lots of whipped cream, thick chocolate sauce, brownie or cookie pieces, and ice cream. It’s on the sweeter side, so it can feel a bit heavy, but that’s expected here. The strawberry dessert was lighter and added some balance compared to the fully chocolate-heavy options.
The place is lively and crowded, especially since it’s a popular tourist stop, but it’s still fun to experience at least once. Overall, it’s a good spot if you’re in the mood for something indulgent and classic, though portions are big and best shared.
Stopped by for some chocolate and a sundae
Didn’t seem to have quite as upbeat a vibe as when we were here last
Checkout guy seemed a bit inconvenienced by customers generally and was about as warm as the ice cream
People making the sundaes and bringing them out really nice and perky
Sundae itself was ok and nicely presented, but given it was hot fudge (the one they are famous for) there wasn’t much hot going on, – so the fudge but was kind of stuck to the glass and the ice cream very much like ice cream – not the glorious melting affair of a hot fudge
Was better last time we visited and the sundae was nicer last time
Hopefully just having an off day and not going downhill (especially at the premium you pay)
The whole place smells like warm chocolate the moment you walk in, giving it that nostalgic ice cream parlor feel. It is a bit pricey for ice cream, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience make it worth it. The Ghirardelli candy shop next door is also worth a peek if you want to take a little sweetness home. Definitely a fun and classic San Francisco stop.
