Social Profile:

Gerst Haus is an Evansville Indiana German Restaurant and Bar, and since 1999 it has been an Evansville favorite, providing the best in German food in an authentic beer hall atmosphere. Most importantly, our menu includes a variety of German and American food, as well as signature dishes that include our fresh wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and corned beef and cabbage. Furthermore, we are noted for the “Best” Reuben sandwich in Evansvill, where our other Gerst Haus is also located. At Gerst, we feature giant frozen Fishbowls of our own Gerst Amber beer, as well as 49 draughts and a large selection of imported beers. Our goal is to provide good food, good drink, and great service.

Traditional German & American plates paired with plenty of beer in a quaint old-world setting.

We drove 2 hours down here after hearing this place had amazing German food, which we like and have eaten at a number of places. The service was outstanding, the restaurant has a great vibe, but 75% of our food was not good.

We got the sausage plate appetizer, the meat was pretty good, definitely more like Hillshire farms sausage, I don’t think they are making these sausages in house. The hot potato salad that came with it tasted like the sauce was Asian sweet and sour sauce with red peppers mixed in it, never had German potato salad like that and hope I don’t again.

I had the reuben with spaetzel. The reuben was good, the spaetzel was terrible. It seemed to be scooped with a food service scoop but possibly that morning and left uncovered. The outside of the blob was very dry, the noodles were all globbed together and doughy once you got past the dry outer layer. The mushroom gravy was VERY salty and tasted like the jarred Heinz beef gravy with some canned mushrooms mixed in.

My husband had the salmon with spaetzel and German fries. Salmon was great. We’ve already talked about the terrible spaetzel. The German fries were extremely dry and burnt tasting, like they’d made them the day before and reheated them too many times on really high heat.

Their house beer is decent.

All in all there is a German restaurant in Jasper and one in French Lick that we will drive too next time.

Gerst Bavarian Haus is a casual restaurant and bar, serving authentic German food and American favorites. We were seated immediately on a Sunday evening. Staff were all very nice and attentive. We tried the fried oysters, wiener schnitzel, and the beef stroganoff and all items were served hot and tasted great! My date said the wiener schnitzel was “crave-able!”

Great service and better food. The gumbo was delicious and came with a jalapeño corn bread flat bread. The spaetzle was amazing and they had the best stroganoff I have ever had. 10/10 would recommend you stop in for a meal.

Had the catfish, French fries and coleslaw with good beer. I had more breading on my catfish then fish meat, the French fries tasted and looked like old grease the reason for three stars. Coleslaw and corn bread was the best part of the meal.
We did not try any German food as we just returned from being over there for two months. The main reason for coming was to have catfish which it wasa while since we had some. Real let down

This is an excellent place to eat and drink. It looks like a German hunting cabin on the inside. They have a crazy amount of beer on tap. The food is excellent. Gotta try the German potato salad. All the sausages are wonderful.

The food is AMAZING! Seriously. The service is good (my waitress was very helpful), the “atmosphere” is good, and they have a very interesting story, (It used to be a hardware store), but if you like sausage and wienerschnitzel, then you will LOVE this place. I literally got out my phone to take a picture, and before I knew it, I had eaten everything off of my plate. And I ordered the “sausage sample appetizer”, and that was all I could eat… so the price value is probably the best you’ll ever find for a “nice” restaurant.

This is a great place to eat. The German food and beer are fantastic. The service was good and the old-timey atmosphere just adds to the experience. Would definitely visit again.

We were greeted by the friendly staff, and our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. We started our meal with the Bavarian Pretzel. Soft interior, chewy and a little bit salty, but overall very delicious especially with the side cheese sauce. My wife ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with Coke Slaw, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My son ordered the German Bologna Sandwich with German Fries, but he did not like it. He said the meat lacked flavor, wished that another cheese was used because the pepper jack did not add much to the flavor profile, and the German fries were dry. I ordered the Smoked Mett Ring Sandwich, and loved the smoky flavor of the meat and tge casing had a nice snap. The bread was fresh, and the Sauerkraut added some tanginess that added even more flavor. The Hot German Potato Salad was a bit too sweet for me.

The waitress was super friendly. We used to live in Evansville and had been there several years ago and had high expectations since the meal back then was scrumptious. I ordered jagerscnitzel with cabbage and spaetzle. The food was warm like it had been heated over. The spaetzle was gummy and cold, I couldn’t eat it. We got a slice of German chocolate cake to go. Disappointing that it wasn’t homemade. Not sure what changed but the experience was overall disappointing from what I had before.
