I also tried calling to let you know about the issue, but no one picked up the phone. It would be really helpful if you warned customers about the level of spiciness or made it optional. After this experience, I don’t even feel like coming back anymore.
I’m born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia and have been trying out different Georgian places. This is my fourth one and did not disappoint!
Additionally, the wrap was placed directly into a paper bag with no foil or wrapping, which made it a bit messy and caused it to cool down quickly. I’ve never seen a place do that before super unprofessional. It also would’ve been helpful to include some napkins with the order. Since I’m spending $18+
• Georgian salad – 4★
• Eggplants with walnuts – 5★
• Imeruli Khachapuri – 3★
• Chicken shawarma – 2★
• Shashlik (pork) – 1★
• Khinkali – 1★
For the last two dishes on the list, I’d give 0 stars if possible, but since I can’t, I have to include them in the rating calculation.
I can justify my ratings based on my experience in both cooking and food appreciation:
1. Khinkali should be made from thin, elastic dough, which requires thorough kneading by hand. Thankfully, with the invention of the planetary mixer, this process can now be done in just a few minutes. However, what I was served goes beyond my understanding of khinkali. The dough was thick, and they were wrapped by someone who was clearly doing it for the first time—because if you know what you’re doing, you simply wouldn’t make this. (Photo attached.)
2. Shashlik, especially Georgian shashlik, should be grilled over an open flame or on a mangal. What I got was dry, flavorless meat that, judging by its texture, was likely cooked in an air fryer at best—or in an oven at worst. It lacked any of the rich, smoky taste that defines a proper shashlik.
3. I was excited to see shawarma on the menu—it was actually the main reason we came to this place. But I have to say, my expectations and reality turned out to be very different. Describing this dish won’t take long: it was basically a Caesar salad wrapped in lavash. However, I’ll give credit where it’s due—the chef did a good job crisping up the lavash after wrapping, so at least the texture was right in some places.
Final verdict:
The prices here are too high for the quality of the food. I wouldn’t recommend this place, except for the eggplant salad, which was genuinely good.
At this point I’ve given up on this establishment and instead spent the same or less amount of money at Abra’s Grill just down the road. Authentic Georgian Shawarma that actually tastes the part and leaves you satisfied. No comparison.
