My husband LOVES this place and often will ask to go to Genies for breakfast any chance he gets. This place is has amazing breakfast food and a warm welcoming staff. I am confident in saying this place serves the best biscuits and gravy and house potatoes.

My go-to brunch location for more than two decades! Delicious and reasonably priced options abound for a vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Gluten-free options available also. Good coffee, Great cocktails. My only complaints are the two things that used to be there that I loved and no longer are: high quality tea and cozy booths. Would love to see both of those things return, but even if they don’t I’ll keep going there for another two decades.

Here’s a NED-style review of Genie’s Café (Portland, OR):
—
✅ What Works Well
– Top-Tier Breakfast & Brunch: Known for hearty, scratch-made breakfast fare like Benedicts, scrambles, and biscuits & gravy. The Chorizo Benedict is a standout.
– Great Bloody Marys: House-infused vodkas (like jalapeño or garlic) make their Bloody Mary bar a local favorite.
– Cozy Diner Vibe: Casual, friendly atmosphere with classic Portland charm — laid-back but welcoming.
– Gluten-Free & Veg Options: Several vegetarian, gluten-free, and substitution-friendly choices.
– Local Favorite: It’s been a staple on SE Division for years — consistently praised for reliable food and service.
—
What to Watch Out For
– Wait Times on Weekends: It’s a popular brunch spot, so there can be a wait (especially late mornings).
– Small Space: Limited seating inside — can feel cramped during peak hours.
– Service Can Vary: Usually solid, but a few guests mention slow refills or rushed servers when it’s packed.
– Heavy Food: Portions are big and rich — not ideal if you’re seeking a light or quick meal.

Verdict

The staff were very friendly and quick! The food and drinks were in generous portions and my partner and I would have taken some home if they weren’t so darn tasty! Can’t wait to be back in Portland to visit again!

So good! Dang tasty, cooked to perfection. Solid hollandaise. The Bloody Mary was amazing – so many fantastic pickles and bacon, even though mine was virgin ($6.95). Definitely making this a repeat breakfast spot!

We had a nice breakfast here! As a couple, we split the veggie hash and there was plenty for both of us. It was really tasty. Lots of options for vegetarians. The service was okay. It was pretty quiet and the seating was comfortable. Street parking nearby. My chai was alright – tasted more like milk than tea.

We absolutely love this place for breakfast! Portions are big so we got a traditional breakfast to share and they split it for us and put it on separate places, so considerate! The hashbrowns were perfectly crisp and salted and toast perfectly buttered. Our server was very sweet and the cooks in the back know what they’re doing. Pancake also 10/10

Can’t say enough good things about this Cafe! One of those good things being the SALSA! I wish I discover this place years ago. Sumo Auto (also GREAT) gave me a token for a coffee, I love a neighborhood that’s takes care of each other.

Old Portland brunch spot that still survives intact! Locally sourced ingredients, well prepared and quick, attentive and friendly service. Although the Bloody Marys look beautiful and have lovely garnishes, I personally feel they have gone downhill and I now go for a Bailey’s and coffee or mimosa. Still, highly recommend!
