Ala Moana GEN restored my faith.

My family and I love Yakiniku and would always go to other GENs, unfortunately those continued to decline in their service.

However Matt from Ala Moana turned that all around! We had 2 gift cards gifted to us and were reluctant to even use them. We decided after seeing the Lion Dance performance that to save money we would settle with eating something early with our family of 4 at the Ala Moana location.

We were seated immediately, and in a spot that had a really nice breeze. Which was amazing since Yakinikus can get very Smokey. It wasn’t too cold and the smoke from our grill and accumulation of others never bothered us.

The real shocker was when our kids pop corn chicken and French fries came out first! Having 2 younger ones, this was always a concern because in the past we’ve had to remind our server to the entire sitting about the kids pop corn chicken which left them only eating rice for a whole hour, but not here, Matt at the team were really on it.

Anytime staff passed our table they were either dropping off food or clearing empty plates. This was so appreciated and did not go unnoticed. The team worked together really well.

We will gladly plan the trip out to eat here again for our next Yakiniku fix. Thanks everyone!

I visited Gen Korean BBQ House at Ala Moana Center and it turned out to be a lively and energetic dining experience, especially if you enjoy Korean barbecue in a group setting. The restaurant operates in an all-you-can-eat format where guests can order multiple rounds of meats and grill them directly at the table.

The atmosphere inside is very active. The dining room is usually busy, with tables filled with grills cooking different cuts of meat at the same time. It creates a social environment that works well for groups, celebrations, or casual dinners with friends.

The menu includes a variety of marinated and non-marinated meats such as beef brisket, short rib, pork belly, and chicken. Once the meats arrive, they are cooked directly on the tabletop grill, which allows you to control the doneness and enjoy the food fresh off the grill.

Another part of the experience is the banchan, the small Korean side dishes that accompany the meal. These sides help balance the richness of the grilled meats and add variety throughout the meal.

Service during my visit moved quickly despite the restaurant being full. Staff brought out new rounds of meat promptly and kept the grills and tables maintained throughout the meal.

What stood out most was the overall energy of the place. Gen Korean BBQ feels less like a quiet dinner and more like a social dining experience where people gather around the grill, cook together, and share plates.

Overall, Gen Korean BBQ House is a great spot if you are looking for a lively Korean barbecue experience in Honolulu with a wide variety of meats and a fun group atmosphere.

Lets start with service. I asked for a quiet corner simce it was about hour before they closed. They wanted to seat us by the isle where all the servers were going in & out, bar tenders cleaning the bar infront of us and 3 families with babies surrounding us. The server was able to find us another table which we had to share … they were out of all the beers… i have no idea how can they be out of beers at a restaurant but ok… and atleast 10 items were out of stock. Lol… and the server kid saod he couldn’t find a spoon for my wife’s soup… what’s that??? Cant find a freaking spoon for a soup? At a restaurant? I cant type anymore… you decide the rest… lol… meat was ok… we had the premium package too… smh…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Masterclass in Aloha and Service!
If you’re looking for a dining experience that feeds your soul as much as your appetite, look no further than Gen Korean BBQ at Ala Moana.

After driving all the way from Ewa Beach with a gift card and a very restricted diet, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the team here turned what could have been a difficult meal into a highlight of my week.

The Highlights:

Above & Beyond Management: The manager, Andrew, is an absolute gem. He personally stepped in to ensure my dietary needs were met with care and precision. His attention to detail and genuine kindness made me feel truly seen and valued.

Exemplary Service: Our server, Lianna, was incredible. She assisted Andrew flawlessly, providing warm, attentive service that made the entire meal seamless.

The Food & Drink: Even with my restrictions, the quality was evident. While I couldn’t eat everything I ordered, my friends absolutely raved about the Chicken Katsu! Also, do not miss out on the Cucumber Beverage—it is refreshing, unique, and simply amazing.

It is rare to find a team that leads with such authentic smiles and “can-do” spirit. Andrew and Lianna, thank you for your hospitality and for making the drive from Ewa more than worth the effort.

Please support this location! Whether you have specific needs or just want a fantastic meal, you will not be disappointed. They don’t just serve food here; they serve Aloha.

We went here with a large party of 14 at opening and we all had a great time. The food was delicious and our server Abcde took great care of us and was super friendly. We’d all highly recommend making a stop here. Mon-Thurs lunch is around $21 per person and kids 4-10 half price. For All you can eat its a great deal.

Gen K-BBQ is a great option around the Waikiki area. The price can’t be beat. The food quality is decent, made better considering the price. The selection of items is good, even the regular non premium menu option. Some of the meat options were on the tough side, like the premium steak, pork belly and ox intestines. Our server Lauren was great. Initially she was really busy so it was a slow start but when she wasn’t as busy, she was quite attentive and friendly. I would recommend it and will be back.

GEN Ala Moana was outstanding, fresh, flavorful food, quick service, and a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

Randy was an exceptional server: attentive, fast, and genuinely friendly. Everything stayed smooth because he was on top of it the entire time.
The whole team was great, and Manager Andrew even stopped by our table to say hi and check in, which really showed how well-run this place is.
Highly recommend, definitely coming back.

I always leave GEN Ala Moana way too full. The wagyu was worth the premium menu and always ask for a side of ssamjang and garlic (its the best sauce and roasted garlic fresh off the grill is a must). The peach soju is always solid to share with friends. The servers check in pretty often so you can always get another round of meats ordered before you finish what you have. It gets busy because its Ala Moana so just throw your name on the waitlist and go shopping for a bit.

Really good meats and lots of options. Did have to wait a while for seating even at 8 pm. Would definitely go again as food was great. Service was good but as they were trying to clean up with people leaving we got waited on less

Service was good, YET. The food was not the best considering it was a very PRICEY meal for 2 people. The meats were not the best qualities for what you are paying. I have eaten many Korean restaurants and this place was the worst food I have tasted in a long time. If you want the experience of Korean culture then YES..But, not for the food..
