I’m not sure what’s going on with this place, but it’s very chaotic inside. The waiters look miserable, and confused. I’ve been to many Korean bbq restaurants and never seen the waiters just walk around with 10 plates of raw meat in their hand, and some of it just falling off into the floor. They really need proper training on how to run a Korean bbq restaurant. It would be nice if the they had more staff to come around to change the grills and clean the tables while the waiters are busy. Maybe they’re just understaffed, but I felt kinda bad for the workers. They also had no oil at all for the grills so the meat just stuck and burned to the grill.

I’ve visited several Gen Korean BBQ locations, including those in Ala Moana (Oahu), West Sahara (Vegas), and Cerritos (California). Unfortunately, my experience at the Gen in Maui was the worst by far. Despite the restaurant being empty, we waited around 15 minutes to be seated, followed by an additional 20 minutes before we were served. After that, it took yet another 20 minutes to receive the meat for cooking.
One major downside is that the Gen Maui location does not change the grill between orders, which means that the next batch of meat you receive will have remnants from the previous one, leading to an unsatisfactory dining experience. It felt as if the restaurant didn’t care about customer satisfaction.
To top it off, the quality of the meat was disappointing it seemed like we were only served trimmings. I would recommend staying away from Gen Maui.

I’ve been to four other Gen locations before this one, and I’ve never been told that they don’t switch out the grills once they get covered in burnt sauce and meat. Our server said they gave us radishes to “clean” the grill, which did absolutely nothing. After each round of meat orders, we were scraping the grill ourselves with the tongs and pushing the burnt bits to the side (as shown in the photo) so we don’t get smoked out by what’s burning on the grill while waiting a long time for the next order of meats.

When I asked for a new grill, I was told no — only to watch the same server change the grill for the table next to us shortly after. Service was also slow for a quiet Monday night, and I had to ask multiple times for the sauce I ordered in the first round.

Overall, this was the worst experience I’ve had at any Gen location or Korean BBQ restaurant.

Test just like the one in California lol, good taste, no complaint. Same price $34.95 too. Make sure you go Costco buy the $70 for $100 gift cards tho.

It’s a great place in Maui a few minutes away from the airport. It was my very first time dining at a Korean Barbecue restaurant. So I didn’t know what to order. But the server was nice enough give me some recommendations. Also this a restaurant where you have to cook your own food. And once again the server diligently walked me and my wife through all the steps. The meat comes pre-marinated and and ready to set on the grill. The long bones ribs was delicious and cooked so fast and easy. I can’t forget the kimshy fried rice well cooked and very tasty. The drinks were amazing. I had a great time in this restaurant and will definitely go back there whenever I go to Maui. Mahalo

We just dined at GEN Korean BBQ and wanted to share some feedback from our visit.
After being seated, we waited about 20 minutes before our server was able to greet us. He dropped off rice and side dishes and let us know he’d be with us shortly, but another 10 minutes passed before he returned, and we still hadn’t received water. At that point, I asked the host about our seating time, and she told me we had only been seated 9 minutes earlier. Unfortunately, that did not align with our experience, as I had texted my brother right when we sat down, and the timestamp showed we had been seated closer to 25 minutes earlier. Her attitude was extremely rude and off-putting.
I want to be very clear that my issue was not with our server. He was clearly busy and doing his best. The concern was that he continued to be seated with multiple tables without additional support. It was confusing to see management not stepping in to assist with basic needs such as greeting tables, providing water, or helping take orders while he was clearly overwhelmed.
The host, who was also the manager wearing a red shirt, (Jan 31, 2026 5pm) unfortunately handled the interaction in a way that came across as dismissive and unprofessional. Rather than helping clarify or de-escalate the situation, her attitude made the experience more uncomfortable.
The saving grace of our visit was the off-island trainer who came over and helped diffuse the situation. He was extremely professional, apologetic, and attentive, and we truly appreciated the way he handled everything.
We enjoy GEN and understand that busy days happen. But unfortunately the restaurant wasnt very busy, it was just disorganized. They were having a meeting in the middle of the shift or shift change. This feedback is simply meant to highlight an opportunity for improved communication, stronger floor leadership, and better support for servers being sat with multiple tables. With a little more teamwork, the experience could have been much smoother. Unfortunately this happens way to often at this location. The only reason we keep coming back is because it is the only Korean bbq restaurant on Maui. My hope is that the trainer turns things around because out of all the Gen locations, Maui is at the bottom and we’ve dined in Tustin, chino hills, San diego, cerritos, Huntington beach and Las vegas.

Ate with a group of 6 on 2/15/26. Seated promptly on two adjoining tables. Only one of the four meats arrived for one table while second table received all meats. Flagged down server to ask about other three meats and sides. Due to the delay in communication from server to food runner, we sat idle for 30 minutes. After eating, we provided server with payments. Reason for low score: While waiting for our payments to process, the floor manager came to out table and told us that we have exceeded our allotted two hours and that other folks are waiting to be seated. Her delivery was rude and unapologetic and walked away before we could respond. She then delivered the same message to the group of tables behind us, who replied that they were seated for only an hour. This level of poor communication between the server, and the runners, the floor manager is unacceptable. It is sad that this place allows this level of service to exist.

I usually only leave reviews when it’s warranted, but this is in a good way! This was our first time ever eating at Gen!
Unique experience, very good food, but for me it always boils down to the quality of service as much as the food and atmosphere.
Our dining experience was truly enhanced by the outstanding, personal service we received from a young man by the name of Sky. We we’re so appreciative of the time he warmly took to accommodate my wife and I as we poured through the extensive menu.
The atmosphere was nice the food was great, but the service was exceptional. Thank you Sky for making our last night in Maui such a memorable event!

Shout out to Kate who was our server that saved dinner tonight. Professional and personal, she was the perfect person serving our table on a surprisingly busy Tuesday night. Never managed a restaurant ever, but if a rice cooker went out? I’d buy it myself to make sure my team/customers/business didn’t suffer….argue with corporate later… blah blah blah. Lastly, I wouldnt snuff my staff when theyre talking to me about an issue…especially in front of customers. So Justin? Do better. It was remarkable that you jumped in and helped your team by delivering our drinks…and I know that deep down, you’re probably a good manager. But you didnt let us see that when you just walked away the way you did. Because she called you Archie? Thats a stretch from the customers view. Responding with grace under pressure would’ve made you great tonight. Sending out a different manager that resolved the issue was a missed opportunity for you to take responsibility. I cant recall her name, but she shared some laughs with us and did a great job taking responsibility and apologizing for you. PS -Lilikoi, you came in clutch with every little thing we asked…and it wasn’t even your job. We appreciate you filling in every gap on a busy night. Wishing yall great success….and 2 new rice cookers lol.

We have been regular premium clients of Gen’s and frequently bring our family, friends, and visiting relatives here while on Maui. Unfortunately, our experiences have steadily declined. Service has become excessively slow, with wait times of 20-30 minutes between interactions, and we often felt ignored. Staff avoided eye contact and appeared disengaged, showing little sense of urgency while maintaining a very slow pace. During our most recent visit, the experience was so poor that we stopped eating, paid the bill, and left. Regrettably, we do not plan to return or recommend this establishment to others.
