We had dinner at the Gem Steakhouse and Saloon and it was an enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is nice with multiple rooms of seating, a full cocktail bar and outdoor balcony seating. The New York Strip that I had was delicious and properly prepared. Our server was friendly even though she was very busy.

My wife and I went here for our anniversary lunch and were greeted by very friendly and accommodating staff.

The food was priced a little high for the quality, but our waitress was very polite and attentive to our table.

A strange man at another table that seemed almost like a character that would reside in Al Swearengen’s brothel back in the day leered at us throughout the beginning of our experience until we asked to be moved, to which we were moved to a private booth promptly. Although this experience was uncomfortable, to me it added to the authentic Deadwood experience that a tourist may have received back in the late 1800’s.

Worth going here if you are a fan of the history!

Great food. We are here for lunch. The buffalo chilli was the best. Fish is good too.

Not going to recommend this place to anyone. Chicken fried steak (or blackened?) was definatly cooked in old grease or overcooked.. Had to ask twice for a refill of ice tea and empty water glasses. Not busy and plenty of staff so not sure what the issue is (not a new server or new cook)? If reply is given don’t want to hear we’ll do better next time. Quality and integrity. Apologies for the rant but on vacation and dislike the lack customer service.

Tucked into the historic downtown of Deadwood, South Dakota, The Gem Steakhouse and Saloon delivers a memorable dining experience that blends classic Western charm with modern comfort. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by warm lighting, rustic decor, and the inviting buzz of the bar — a clear highlight of the establishment. The bartenders here know their craft. Whether you’re in the mood for a locally inspired cocktail, a classic Old Fashioned, or one of their many top-shelf whiskeys, you’ll find the drink selection impressive and the pours generous.

The bar seating is comfortable and encourages conversation, but for those looking for a quieter or more scenic dining experience, the outside seating area is a must. With large windows that offer a stunning view of the historic Main Street below and the Black Hills in the distance, it’s the perfect spot to unwind with a drink and a steak.

Speaking of steaks — they’re cooked to perfection. Tender, well-seasoned, and served with hearty sides, the food holds its own alongside the ambiance. The service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing, adding to the relaxed yet refined atmosphere.

Whether you’re stopping in for a cocktail or settling in for a full meal, The Gem offers a little something for everyone. It’s a great place to soak in the Deadwood vibe with a cold drink in hand and a front-row seat to the town’s charm.

We went here for breakfast, I wish we chose somewhere else. It was a little hard to find. Service was quick, maybe a little too quick. Our server was pleasant. The food was awful. The hashbrowns were like shreds of plastic, and the bacon was definitely deep fried. The only thing edible was the eggs and coffee. So many other little cafes in the area that probably would’ve been a lot better.

We ate breakfast and it was so good. Crystal the waitress was so nice and visited with us. Everything was so perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants a great experience. I also ate at the GEM the prior year on vacation and it was just as good.

Our server. Kayleigh (?) was top notch. She was professional, attentive, great with suggestions on steak choice, checked with us often enough to meet our needs, but didn’t hover. She shows pride in her work and the establishment she works for. It was fairly slow, so when we engaged her in conversation, she spent a few minutes chatting.
I had the New York strip, my wife had the sirloin. Both were cooked to our request. Both had great flavor. My steak had a bit more grisle than I hoped for, but that’s pretty minor. Our baked potatoes were cooked properly & the steamed vegetables were cooked as they should be. We chose to share a slice of the lemon cake for desert. It was delightful!
The atmosphere is beautiful and our table was intimate.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner & our server couldn’t have been better!
Thank you!

Excellent food in a nice quiet environment with comfortable seating. Very interesting how it is located in the place of the original Gem from the 1800s. If you’re a fan of the HBO Deadwood series then take note the restaurant seems to honor another HBO series – Chernobyl, because that’s how hot their horseradish is!. Far better than any horseradish I’ve ever eaten.
