There is that worry going back somewhere that was amazing. When my daughter wanted to return to Gavroche for her birthday, I hoped it would live up to our last visit. They nailed it again last night.
Firstly, the intimate restaurant is comfortable and the service is fabulous including the ever present, gregarious Jason Chan who just happens to be passionate about food.
And the food – so delicious, so richly French, and now I can attest consistently fantastic!
The egg starter is an absolute must. Also highly recommend the foie two-ways, heirloom carrots, charred leeks, and orange duck (all repeat dishes that we devoured and considered licking the sauce from the plates!) We sampled a few specials – same amazing flavors and beautiful presentation. Add in a pair of cocktails were unique and well balanced (Dirty Word was my favorite!) and what a meal!
Highly recommend Gavroche: great date spot works equally well for family dinner or out-of-town guest.
Come for the food, enjoy the hospitality!
The service really stood out during our festival weekend visit. Our server was engaging and conversational, adding to the lively atmosphere without being intrusive. The extensive wine list is clearly a point of pride, and their rosé paired nicely with brunch.
While it’s on the pricier side the quality of food and overall experience justify the cost. Gavroche strikes that balance between upscale dining and approachable weekend brunch vibes. Great spot for a special occasion or when you want to treat yourself to something beyond the typical brunch fare.
Amazing food isn’t hard to find in the city of Chicago and this is no exception but the service, attention to detail, and hospitality is what puts it above and beyond. Jason even took the time to visit our table and write down recommendations for the rest of our trip. This should top your list of must-try restaurants in the city.
Our highlights: the Lyonnaise, the Yellowtail Crudo (pictured here), the Duck A L’Orange, and the fries (fried in beef tallow, incredible seasoning blend, and a delicious aoili). It was all too good to get too many pictures before diving in and I’m not sorry about it.
To my surprise, when I went to the restroom, I noticed cutouts from one of my favorite paintings, The Garden of Earthly Delights — such an unexpected and delightful coincidence! It left me amazed.
A solid 5 stars for everything!
P.S. If I could suggest one tiny touch — playing some French music would transport the customers straight to the Champs-Élysées! ✨
The oeuf appetizer stood out for its presentation as well as taste. We had a hard time choosing a favorite entree – there were no weak links. The A5 ribeye was amazing.
The wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive and professional. We really had a great experience and I look forward to more great meals there.
