After about 30 minutes, our server, who also identified himself as the manager named Vinny, approached us & asked whether we had already placed our order. I was caught off guard since he was the one who had taken it. He assured us he would check on it because it should not have been taking that long yet no explanation was provided. It is also worth noting that this was a Monday late morning/ early afternoon & the restaurant was not busy. That alone raised concerns about how service would function during peak hours. The situation became more frustrating when the table next to us, who had been seated after us, received their food first. I went to look for Vinny to share my concern & encountered another employee who said she did not know who Vinny was. I have never worked in an establishment where staff members do not know their coworkers or management.
When our food finally arrived, the order was incorrect. I had specifically requested to substitute fries for a salad & that request was ignored. At that point, Vinny explained that they had received a large order. If that had been communicated from the beginning then the delay would have been much more understandable. Instead, the lack of communication made the experience worse & offering free drinks felt like an inadequate solution to a service failure of this scale. We chose to leave & dine elsewhere where we received proper service. I have eaten here a few times before & unfortunately feel the quality continues to decline. This experience solidified that I will not be returning. I now understand why my family avoids this restaurant & I can’t say that I blame them.
It took 30 minutes to get one beer.
I order the lobster roll, my friend orders a hamburger cooked to medium. Now, given that this was on Labor Day, I assumed the food would take a little while. It took less time for us to get our food than it took for me to get the one beer. When our food does come out, my friend’s burger is beyond well done; practically burnt and beyond dry.
My lobster roll is pitifully small, served in what looked like a grocery store hot dog bun that is so burnt on the bottom it’s entirely charred, and rock solid. For $30, there was only 4 oz of lobster mix. The portion of fries outweighed the lobster roll, the sprig of parsley was half the size of the lobster roll. I also notified the kitchen of my food allergy, it was disregarded and still served with the allergen.
Both of our dishes were also bland.
Throughout the meal, as other staff would bus tables, they’d throw the remaining liquid in glasses over my shoulder, into the bushes next to our table. Disgusting.
I did ask to speak to the manager and explained the many many issues, when he offered to buy us dessert I said that we were ready to leave and to do what he thinks is the right thing to do for our bill. He offers then to buy the beer I ordered.
10 minutes go by and the manager returns with a new beer. I tell him, again, that we’d like to leave and did not want this. He says he’ll comp both off our check. 10 more minutes go by before we see our server and ask her to bring us our separate checks. The manager interrupts her splitting the checks and instead presents one check to us, prompting us to pay even though we asked again for a split bill. We paid and left, I made sure to still tip the server since other people’s incompetencies aren’t her fault.
The overall attitude from the management is apathetic, as if they believe because they’re bound to get tourists due to their location they don’t have to work hard or take any pride in what they’re doing. I’ve been in the service industry for over a decade, that is a terrible attitude to have. I live in Long Beach and will not be going back. There are so many other great restaurants that going to Gaucho Beach again would be a waste of money. It was a waste of money to go there in the first place.
Happy hour has decent beers and the artichoke dip was alright – didn’t provide enough pita bread for it at all and they don’t provide refills on the bread. Seems like they do everything they can to save money.
However, we decided to give them a chance for brunch. Came the day after Valentine’s Day for brunch with bae. Ordered the lobster omelette and chicken and waffles. Both came out almost room temperature.
Complained and received replacements that were exactly the same temperature as before. Asked for togo boxes (because we prepaid), got the hell up out there and went to get some way better food!
The waiter didn’t apologize, no manager approached us to apologize and offer some type of recompense. Needless to say we will never come here to eat again. It sucks because they are located at a prime location with a beautiful view of the beach.
