Please read this and other reviews! Do not waste your money and time! All the seafood were over cooked. The shrimp tasted like rubber. The noodle was super sweet it felt like eating sugar. The clay pot fish was sooo salty and tasted only soya source. They must have changed management or chefs. It is a joke if they are any remotely closer to a Michelin standard. I’d say fast food chains have better food

I stumbled upon this restaurant while scrolling through Instagram, and it immediately caught my attention. It’s pretty rare to find Vietnamese restaurants featured on the Michelin Guide, but this spot has earned a place on the OC Michelin Guide for several years. I’ve been obsessed with Vietnamese food lately so I’ve been making quite a few trips to the Little Saigon area and this visit did not disappoint.

Garlic and Chives is tucked inside the Mall of Fortune, alongside other well-known spots like OC Lau2, Pholover, and 85°C. Unfortunately, many smaller shops in the mall have closed, so it’s not as lively as it once was, but these popular restaurants and bakeries still manage to draw a crowd.

As soon as we were seated and started to look the menu, the first thing I noticed was their special selection of dishes featured on the Michelin Guide in 2019, 2021, and 2022, a pretty impressive feat. I also browsed through the menu while scrolling IG for recommendations and came across the Heo Quay Porchetta with Fine Rice Vermicelli. I tried to order it, but the server called out the chef to explain that this dish requires four hours of preparation and needs to be pre-ordered. Of course, I had unknowingly chosen something that wasn’t even available.

What We Ordered:
1. House Special Pork Chops $16
One of their Michelin Guide dishes! The pork chops are marinated in a unique house-made sauce that’s a perfect balance of salty and sweet. For my taste, it leaned a little salty, but pairing it with the white rice made every bite just right.

2. Salmon Belly Chien Gion $12
This appetizer features crispy fried salmon belly served over a bed of fresh salad. The portion isn’t huge, but the fish is perfectly fried and pairs beautifully with the dipping sauce.

3. Grilled Blood Clams (So Long Nu Ong Mo Hanh) $15
Served sizzling on a hot plate, these blood clams are chewy and packed with flavor.

4. Black Tiger Garlic Noodles (Mi To I Tom Xu Nuong) $16
I’ve had a similar dish at Vox Kitchen before, and this version was just as good. The shrimp was plump and juicy, while the noodles had a rich garlic flavor and came in a generous portion, super satisfying.

5. Hot Tea $2 (each person)
Simple, comforting, and a nice balance to the richer dishes.

From the ambiance to the flavors and service, Garlic and Chives delivered a solid dining experience and I will come back and try some more.

Garlic and Chives is a top tier place to go to for great food in a great environment! The food reminds me of the good food that they serve at night in Vietnam where you go out with lots of friends to drink and eat.

Every dish we ordered came out quick and hot! They dishes looked like it was made with love and the presentation is top notch.

We ordered the ginger lobster at $34/lb. They said the minimum was 3 lbs. if you are looking for less costly lobster, I would not come here.

The service was great and the atmosphere is very clean! The owners take great pride in making g the place well decorated. This place does stand out when compared to other Vietnamese restaurants.

If you are looking for high end, this is the place to come to. I will definitely come back again for a special occasion.

Garlic and Chives at 9892 Westminster Blvd. #311, Garden Grove, located in the Mall of Fortune, is a top-tier spot for incredible Vietnamese food in a lively and welcoming setting.

The moment you step in, you’re greeted with a bustling, energetic vibe, reminiscent of the late-night food culture in Vietnam, where people gather to eat, drink, and enjoy good company. The food here is bursting with flavor, expertly prepared with fresh ingredients and bold seasonings.

Some standout dishes include their crispy salmon belly, garlic butter wings, and shaken beef—each dish perfectly balanced in taste and texture. Whether you’re here for a casual meal or a feast with friends, the menu has something for everyone.

Service is quick and attentive, and the portion sizes are generous, making it a great value for the quality you get. If you’re looking for a place that brings the spirit of Vietnamese dining to life, Garlic and Chives is a must-visit in Garden Grove! ️

Small restaurant within the Fortune Shopping strip mall. The food is very tasty!! It’s Vietnamese food with a modern twist. All the dishes were well seasoned and nicely portioned. Highly recommend the paper rice salad and salmon belly summer roll! The server was really sweet. There’s a wide selection of seafood dishes. Think atmosphere can use a makeover. Foodwise, it was delicious!!

Michelin Guide recognized for multiple years in the past. I’m missing something here because my dining experience was not as expected given the high ratings.

Upon entering, we noticed an extremely strong, fishy smell, like fish sauce. Surprisingly, there was no wait on a Saturday night. We were promptly seated and order taken within a timely manner. Food arrived to the table fairly quick, too. Our meal consisted of:

•Salmon belly chien gion/deep fried salmon belly: ok
•Muc lan bot/deep fried calamari: too oily, low quality
•Rau cai be cuon with tom, thit: refreshing, different take on a goi cuon but without the noodles or spring roll wrap
•Canh cai chua suon/pickled mustard greens soup with pork bones: too sweet, meat questionable
•Rau muong xao oc huong/stir fried ong choy with sea snails: small portion, too sweet, sea snails too tough and hard

None of the entrees came with white rice. It was an additional $3 per bowl. We didn’t enjoy our meal at all. It was one of the most disappointing meals we’ve had.

The Chardonnay they served was utterly awful—flat, vinegar-tasting, and frankly insulting for a place that dares to claim fine dining status.

What’s worse, the staff’s response to our complaint was we don’t know much about wine, as if we should just accept whatever substandard product they decided to serve. The lack of accountability and attention to detail was shocking, especially for a restaurant boasting a Michelin star.

The food is just ok, nothing is outstanding. But very good service. The tables are divided and separated by the large size of clear plastic walls. I don’t like the butter fried chicken and crunchy salmon belly, they were too much greasy. I love shredded dried beef papaya salad, so delicious. The hot stone pot with pork is good with rice. The fried tofu is boring. Honestly maybe I didn’t order the right plates, our dinner were not as we expected.

Garlic and Chives is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in the OC area.

Restaurant, including the restrooms is clean. Service is prompt and courteous. Lots of parking available in the plaza lot. We have been lucky to come at times when they are not that busy, but I imagine that they would get pretty packed during peak hours.

As for the food, everything on their menu is great. We only wish that they also served pho, simply because we love pho and thats literally the only thing that they are missing! Yes, there are tons of pho places in the area, but if they added it to their menu, it would be heaven as all our favorite Vietnamese dishes would be served in one restaurant!

Only reason for subtracting one star is due to the price compared to the size of the dishes. You can actually see how the prices keep being increased as there are price stickers stacked on top of each other on their menu. *Cries in California*

The papaya salad was very bright and fun and paired great with the crispy (shrimp?) chips. I just wish there was more chips. Loved the bo luc lac and how saucy it was. The garlic noodles were… kinda unremarkable and felt very one dimensional. Service was fine and we enjoyed our time here.

Definitely get the salmon belly. So amazingly crispy and flavorful!
