LOVED our first experience at Gao! So thankful to have a new, unique, fresh cuisine added to Spearfish. The building is beautiful, the staff was sweet, and the food was so fresh and filled with flavor! We ordered the largest Pho dish, Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Egg Rolls and a fresh Coconut to drink. It was fun to share all the dishes, we actually had food leftover because there was a lot for just two adults and two kiddos. The kids are picky eaters and loved it! Every table inside was full so it was a busy, fun atmosphere. The waitress was very attentive and quick, one of the kids dropped a spoon and she noticed from across the room and rushed to replace it right away. They took our order quickly and the food came out quickly as well. After drinking the fresh coconut the waitress opened it up so we could try the coconut “meat”, that was a highlight for the kiddos. We are excited to go back and try the Boba and also the outdoor seating overlooking the creek. Such a fun, busy spot on the weekend with the Farmhouse and Sawyer Pizza next door. We will absolutely be back soon!!

The Atmosphere is nice and will probably attract a lot of the younger crowd, as it does have a cute instagram esthetic. In the fine details, my spoon had lip marks on it, the noodles were not firm, they had the consistency of soggy egg noodles. The broth was not hot but I guess that can be a personal preference but for my husband, this meant that the meat did not continue to cook and a lot of the meat too rare for eating. The tenderloin in the pho was exceptionally tender however, the broth itself lacked depth and could have used chili oil.

Before we hit the road to go home after Rally weekend . My husband want to try the new Vietnamese restaurant in Spearfish. I thought what’s a dumb ideas . With my experiences on Vietnamese food the past week there is no way this new place is different.
To be a lovely surprise, the pho specials with filet mignon I got was fantastic, the meats was given a lot in your bowl, that is the most expensive part of the cow, it melted on my mouth. I’ve been live in big cities all my life and not that easy to find some place they make fresh and cook fresh with limited ingredients like them.
We did have to order some eggs roll and chicken wings for the drive….SO GOOD
We love your views by the creek. And your staffs are so nice and helpful!
We will definitely come back and have more next year!

My fiancé and I were extremely excited to hear that we were getting a Vietnamese restaurant. I was even pleasantly surprised to see they have my favorite dish on the menu despite it being a smaller menu- bun thit nuong!

We decided to go for an early dinner on Wednesday. It is located in a newer building and feels very clean and bright inside.

Sadly, the two dishes we had planned to order off the menu were marked as unavailable. We completely understand they just opened so we just ordered something different, not a huge deal. We asked the waitress if she knew why they weren’t available and she seemed really caught off guard, like she had no idea what we were even talking about at first. She later told us it was because of them waiting on an outdoor cooking permit.. Im assuming the meats on the dishes are meant to be cooked on a flame grill? That’s my best guess, they didn’t really elaborate.

We ended up getting the beef flank pho, an order of the egg rolls, and the fish sauce wings.

First off, the timing of the food could have been better. We were the only customers there and my pho and the egg rolls came out first, and my fiancé was waiting at least another 10 minutes for his wings. Not a huge deal, but for it being so slow it’s very easy to get this right. I understand wings take longer to cook but we would’ve much rather they waited to serve my pho until the wings were done as well. I’m not docking any points for this but I wanted to mention it as constructive criticism for the staff.

Now to the food! The eggs rolls seemed homemade based on the filling and were very crispy and delicious. Cooked perfectly. They were definitely my favorite thing we ate. 9/10

The pho broth was good, it could’ve been a bit more rich but the flavor was on point. I’ve had a lot of pho in my life so I’d like to think I am a decent judge of it. The meat that came in it though, to me, was too thickly cut. When the meat is too thick, it ends up being very bland as it can’t really absorb much of the broth flavor. The same goes for the rice noodles. I’ve never had pho that was served with thick rice noodles like this was. To me, it should be served with the thin rice stick noodles so that the noodles pull the broth up with it in every bite and are also able to absorb more broth flavor. finally, I was a bit sad that my pho was not served with garnishes on the side. Everywhere I’ve ever had pho before, they serve it with a side plate of Thai basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño, and lime. There was a little bit of basil served in the soup, however. 5.5/10

Lastly the fish sauce wings. We did really like these, but our only complaint would be that they were not very fishy. This is another thing my fiancé and I have had quite a lot of, our favorite being the famous Pok Pok fish sauce wings out of Portland. These had a somewhat similar vibe with the fried garlic and the sweet and savory sticky sauce, but we just really wanted more fish sauce flavor. I would also probably order them extra crispy next time but that’s just a personal preference! 7.5/10

Overall we definitely want to come here again to try the two dishes that were unavailable, I have a feeling they are going to be good. I probably won’t order the pho again unless they make some changes to the meat and noodles. The staff was friendly and we left satisfied, though. We really want this place to make it as we absolutely love Vietnamese cuisine!

Updated review: Dinner at Shai this weekend was delicious and even better than the first time we went. The egg rolls were so crispy and flavorful, flank steak pho was flavorful and came with all the toppings (basil, bean sprouts, lime, jalapeños), and we tried the stir fry (pictured) which was AMAZING!

I’m so exicted to have pho in Spearfish! The menu is delicious, the location is beautiful, and the owners and servers are awesome. Fall and winter are going to be so much better with delicious pho nearby!

Small, quaint place. We had egg rolls and shrimp fried rice. The egg rolls were amazing but the shrimp fried rice lacked flavor. We had to add soy sauce and hoisin to add flavor. Also, it was really hot inside. Didn’t feel like the air was on.

Only ordered a boba tea but will definitely be back! The menu looks great and if the food tastes as good as the tea I’m a repeat customer! Fresh and clean inside with a pretty view too.
