This spot is a really decent place for the aesthetics alone. Look, I by no means am someone who loves anime or manga but I certainly recommend if you do possess this type of obsession then give this place a visit. I am more interested in the food. The food was above average. I thought it was a bit interestingly presented but a lot of the time, it left a lot to be desired considering its price point. I personally would not go here for the food alone. Go here for the experience instead, it’ll be worth it even after the prices. Personally for me though, not a place to visit again unless bringing weeby friends over.

Also, have you ever seen a whole cinema in a restaurant? Cause I haven’t but this restaurant just so happens to be playing anime onto a screen for whatever reason so you don’t feel bored at the place.

Quite busy, around 15 – 20 mins from time of order to food arrival for a very basic order. Cheese and spam onigiri presentation was lacking compared to other reviewers, the cheese inside wasn’t fully melted and felt rubbery. The cheese roll has a good presentation, but barely any unagi and the roll was bland and lacking flavour. No return plans, not good value for dollar for the entry level izakaya staples.

Fun spot for anime and food lovers alike! There’s tons of anime artwork to admire painted by the head chef, and decor from One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and more. Some of the menu items are inspired by characters from these shows, but you can mainly find a wide variety of appetizers, sushi, and an extensive yakitori selection. We tried the grilled onigiri with cheese and spam, chicken yakitori, mentaiko cheese yakitori, the sakura roll, and the aburi sushi set. The sakura roll was by far our favourite! Staff were great and very attentive. This is a great spot for groups!

Discovered this gem about a year ago, and glad I did! This cozy little spot offers amazing cuisine that’s plated as well as it’s prepared. Combine that with attentive service and a cool decor and vibe that’s so unique, and you’ve got a regular in your culinary rotation. Best Nabeyaki udon I’ve had outside of Japan. Creative rolls, great Robata, Nigiri, and Sashimi. Their pork gyoza is a 10/10!
I’ve got three or four Japanese restaurants in my immediate neighbourhood, but I happily drive the 30 mins across a bridge in rush hour traffic to get to Ganbei Izakaya instead.

Excellent vibe, fair prices and portions. The owner even treated us to their signature dark beer, which you can’t find anywhere else. They’re open for dining until 1 AM — finally, an izakaya that actually takes late-night, high-quality dining seriously.

I visited this Japanese restaurant and tried the garlic butter clams, salmon sushi, chicken yakitori, and the unagi don. Overall, the food was decent, but I felt it didn’t quite match the price point.

The unagi don sauce was on the sweeter side. The flavor was fine, but the portion felt small for $21. Other items like the clams and sushi also seemed a bit overpriced, and for this level of pricing I expected something more impressive or unique.

The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable.

It’s worth trying once, but if you’re looking for a spot where the experience truly matches the price, there may be better options.

Chinese run Japanese restaurant. The sashimi was good and buttery. Some of the robata items were a little overcooked and chewy. Over all pretty good for Richmond sushi options.

The sashimi omakase is really exquisite given the price. Skewers are perfectly done without over seasoning. Really good late night izakaya option. Their kitchen closes at midnight.

Ganbei Izakaya is a fun-looking Japanese spot in Richmond that reminds me of the little restaurants in Japan. It’s kinda hidden with the entrance in a walkway at a strip mall. The interior has lots of murals and figurines.

Oyster Motoyaki ($9) was big and had enoki mushrooms and corn in the creamy and fatty sauce.
Chicken Yakitori ($7) were quite good and better than the Pork Belly ($8). The Chicken Wings ($10) took the longest to arrive at our table and was my least fav of the items we tried.
Ton-Toro ($12) skewers were quite fatty and tender – better than the pork belly.
BBQ Saba ($15) was pretty good despite being rather basic in appearance.
The Sashimi Salad ($24) was huge but very refreshing. Bbq Salmon Belly ($10) was pleasantly fatty and oily.
Unfortunately, the Tsukune was sold out.
For sushi, we ordered the negitoro, salmon belly, chopped scallop, hamachi – all were quite good from the tender fish down to the rice so we decided to order more sushi:
negitoro, kampachi, unagi.

If you miss the izakayas in Japan, this is a good spot to try out.

This Japanese restaurant is truly a pleasant surprise! The food is absolutely delicious, with each dish fresh and perfectly seasoned. The sushi and sashimi are especially outstanding. The owner is very friendly and always greets you with a smile, making you feel right at home. The service is excellent as well, with the staff being both warm and professional, which makes the dining experience even more enjoyable. And considering the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable—this place offers great value for money and is definitely worth visiting again!
