Traditional American eatery housed in historic digs that once hosted George Washington & John Adams.

Such a fun dining experience! I loved the historical theme — it really feels like you’ve stepped back in time. The food was filling and delicious, and everything we tried was well great.
I was pleasantly surprised by the live entertainment, too. “John Hall” made an appearance, which added so much fun to the dining experience.
Definitely a great spot if you’re looking for something a little different with great food and atmosphere!

We had dinner here a few weeks ago and had a great time. Both George Washington’s Favorite and the Prime Rib were very tasty and a great value! The atmosphere is calm and the decor is cozy. We’ll be going back again soon.

Went here as soon as they opened on a weekday and got in immediately. The sandwich meat, horseradish, and au jus were good but the bread tasted a little old. The food was decent overall but not the best. Service left a little to be desired. I would recommend for the historical value alone.

Typical brunch for an historic place. Food was fairly average with glimpses of high potential. We had the steak and eggs, creole breakfast (grits, bell peppers, steak, and scrambled eggs), omelet, and burger. Two out of four needed some extra seasoning. Service was great throughout.

I really enjoyed having a colonial Virginia experience in the DC area. Just 10 minutes from the Reagan airport. I haf the peanut soup and a colonial cocktail called Stone Fence made with Rum, hard apple cider and bitters. You can get it sweet or unsweetened. Parking is easy at the Tavern Square Garage.

Beautiful historic restaurant with lots of holiday charm. I had the most lovely meal with my family. The staff are so kind, sweet and attentive. They made us feel so welcome and special on a birthday occasion. The chicken pot pie, honey ham appetizer and peanut soup were delicious, as was the gingerbread desert. The stone fence and other cocktails hit the spot. And they have a really varied and delicious kids menu. Will definitely be back! An Alexandria gem.

If you’re looking for a historic authentic experience, this place is a must. The outside of the red brick building caught our attention, and we decided to try. Inside, there was the Colonial charm. We sat down in one of the side rooms. Our waiter was quick and attentive. I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes, and my wife had lamb chops. The food was delicious. As it started getting darker outside, there was a warm, dark ambiance to the room. It felt like stepping back in time. The place is a must if you’re visiting Alexandria, a place that exceeded our expectations and will leave a lasting impression on us.

Fantastic food in a cool environment, service was slow, waitress could have been friendlier, you don’t really get any information about the history, at least not at the time we went. Took way too long to get service between courses and upon completing. Also it’s quite humid and warm on a summer day. Definitely worth it for the food and historical value, though the prices are a bit high. Peanut soup is fine, clam chowder is solid, George Washington’s favorite is fantastic.

Beautifully staged event for the American Friends of Lafayette’s penultimate event of the 13 month Bicentennial Farewell Tour. The menu was divine and delicious – from the cocktail hors d’oeuvres to the dinner menu and dessert. Beautifully executed. Thank you AFL & Gretchen Bulova, Historic Alexandria! ❤️⚜️ ⚜️ ❤️

Delicious and huge portions! Sorin is a very good and attentive server. Unfortunately, they don’t wear the old times outfits anymore though.
