Last week I had my second chance to stop in for a beer at Friendly Valley Tavern, and it did not disappoint.

This place has been around since 1947 and definitely leans into that classic dive bar charm, in the best way. The building itself is a small quonset hut (think military surplus style) building, with a solid-sized bar area, tables and chairs, a jukebox, and plenty of retro beer memorabilia on the walls. Like many Illinois bars these days, you’ll also find a few gaming machines tucked inside.

True to the name, the folks inside were friendly and welcoming. On a cold February day, the day-drinkers like myself were more than happy to chat, especially once they heard I was visiting from Florida.

Step just outside and you’ll find one of the tavern’s biggest highlights: a well-done outdoor space. There’s a covered porch area that opens up to a large venue perfect for concerts, music festivals, an area for volleyball leagues, and tournaments. In the colder months, they even fire up a wood-burning bonfire, which adds to the laid-back Midwest vibe.

It’s a bit tucked away down a side road, which probably was way out in the country when it first opened, but that just adds to the appeal. If you like ice-cold beers, friendly locals, great outdoor events, and a bar that’s just divey enough to feel authentic, this spot is worth the stop. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Central Illinois.

Friendly Valley Tavern is truly a gem in Central Illinois. The atmosphere is one of a kind and Sean Kenny and his staff have created a space that feels like a mini festival every time you walk in. From the live music on the lawn to the way the crowd gathers under the stars the energy is always welcoming and uplifting.
It is not just a bar or a venue it is a community. Local and touring musicians love playing here and the crowds are some of the friendliest you will find anywhere. The sound is always great the staff takes care of everyone and the whole vibe encourages people to connect laugh and enjoy themselves.
Whether it is your first time stopping in or your hundredth you will leave with a smile and probably a few new friends. Central Illinois is lucky to have a place like this.

We went around lunch for cozy, intimate vibes. This place delivered. The nostalgic decor was properly decorated and festive. The bartender was incredibly nice and attentive. We just had butches pizza but the beer was cold served in huge frosty mugs. It was perfect for our afternoon

What a hidden gem! This place is the best. The bartender, Brian, was super laid back and easy to talk to. He made us feel like one of the regulars even though it was our first time there. This place has bands, volleyball, food trucks, a back deck, a fire pit, and even a couple of disc golf baskets. I would make the 2 hour trip just to come back here and have a couple beers.

Hidden in the middle of Peoria, a great place to spend an afternoon. You can sit inside or outdoors, great atmosphere. Many activities, live music, volleyball, and dogs are allowed. Whenever you have a chance, stop in and enjoy.

If you come for the outdoor venue and the music or sand volleyball you will come back. If you come for the quansi hut bar and the gaming you will come back. They have a lot of room for parking but you will still see cars up and down both sides of the street several days a week during the summer and even though they are going to be elbow to elbow at times there’s always room for one more. You are not going to be standing around waiting for beers and drinks because they have some real talent behind the bar and it shows. Two thumbs up from this guy.

We have been wanting to visit this awesome little spot for quite a while. It just looks like such a cool place! My only regret is that we haven’t been coming here before now. We did however stop on a great day! They had a maker’s market out back, food trucks and live music which was incredible. Very nice people, dog-friendly & laid back… we really enjoyed our time inside watching football and outside listening to music. The bartender inside was really fun to talk to and she knew her shit! Loved it, loved everything about it. We will absolutely make the trip again to go, especially for the Summer concerts.

Great place to go. The name says it all. Bonfire outside. If you want to have a drink outside. Pizza is available if you get hungry. If you don’t like large crowds. It’s where you want to be.
