Reviews
Around us, several tables were angry because they had been there since 6:30 or so (one group got up and left, shouting the time they arrived as a complaint) but they can write their own review. My risotto was the wrong texture for risotto but the flavors were nice, so I didn’t care.
The issue was with my mothers gnocchi plate. We get our food about another 40 minutes after ordering, which is fine. We got there at 8pm so we were surprised it was so busy. The plate comes out looking nice but with chunks of mozzarella on top. We thought that was odd, but whatever, we like mozzarella.
I went to grab a piece to just try it and had to immediately spit it out. It had a metallic taste and was bitter or sour. My mother goes to try one and says, “This has gone bad.” We again don’t want to cause a fuss, so she just pushes it aside (it hadn’t melted since it was room temperature).
The waitress (possibly manager) comes over and checks in. I say, “Can you please try this cheese?” She goes, “Oh, I don’t eat fresh mozzarella” which…ok. I say, “It has gone bad. You should throw out the rest.” We just wanted to flag it so they didn’t get anyone else sick.
“You’re the only one to complain about the mozzarella all night.” I was taken aback by that statement. You won’t try it but you’re convinced I’m wrong? Which doesn’t even explain the fact of why there are room temperature chunks of mozzarella on a gnocchi dish in the first place, but whatever. I say, “Just a heads up,” she says “Thanks” and that was that.
They were kind enough to comp our drinks without our asking and gave us a coupon for 10% off our next visit. It’s a nice gesture, but the fly buzzing around my plate at the end solidified our decision: We will never return.
Chicken Parmesan is Amazing along with the mozzarella carozza.
Service was just ok
Food was par nothing special
Drinks where watered down
It took a little while to get our orders in and we where not told about any specials (they clearly had specials as the table behind us where told about them) my wife and I ordered 2 cocktails and they where very watered down ($9 each for watered down drinks). it took a long time to get our tomato and mozzarella appetizer (the tomatoes where under ripe) I also ordered the stuffed artichoke (very underwhelming) the salads that came with our dinners where good. We ordered our 2 kids the chicken tenders and fries (the fries where good the chicken tenders where not very tender had to cut them into little pieces so my oldest daughter could eat them) my wife had a chicken dish that was actually very good not sure what it was called but it had tomatoes and mozzarella on top. I had the scallop risotto that was definitely under par. I unfortunately probably will not be going back here which is unfortunate since I live right down the street. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because I’m a generous person and a waitress at the end got our kids ice cream **(sorry I did not get her name but she is probably your best worker there she actually seemed to care)** I would have liked to get desert but at this point we had enough our kids where done and I really didn’t want to wait any longer for another potentially underwhelming item. Had a terrible week at work all I wanted was a nice dinner…. Fail
We ordered wine and began our dinner with fried calamari and stuffed mushrooms. The calamari was fried golden brown and served with a bold marinara sauce. The large mushroom caps were stuffed with a tasty mix of sausage, garlic, onions, herbs.
Then, onto dinner … large portions of shrimp with broccoli rabe, a seafood Michaelangelo with pasta mixed with shrimp and other fresh seafoods topped with a hearty red sauce. Exactly what I had wanted to eat! Steaks and chops also we’re on the menu, to be grilled to your liking, or topped with a variety of brown or tomato sauces, peppercorns. They came out of the kitchen perfectly grilled!
Desserts included a Tiramisou, chocolate cake, Lemoncello cake, sorbetto and tartufo.
The restaurant had new ownership but the original kitchen crew had remained on board! Their skills in the kitchen made our experience an enjoyable and delectable one! I recommend Freelance Bistro for an authentic Italian meal … plenty of food and easy on the wallet.
