I was gonna give it a 6/5, because how could we have a set of food below $10 in this economy! 2 eggs with Corn hash comes with potatoes and pancakes for $9.25. And honestly it’s the best meal I’ve had since coming to Chicago. Not too salty, the beef hash balances the mildness of the potatoes. Good stuff until then… I knew it was too good be true. We each ordered a set of food and 2 coffees, but the bill stated $42.75. no matter how I calculated it, it sums up only to $36. Asked the waiter if this price includes tips? He explained that it was the price including tax, but not the tips. But 42.75/36 amounts to around 20%. How could the tax be 20%???? My dad still gave the waiter a 20% tip so we payed $50 in total including tips. The service and food was both great, but the dishonestly that they demonstrated was unacceptable. Why should we be so nice when they tried to rip us off??? I think we should’ve just payed them $45. Oh well…

First time here. What a great old fashion diner. The food was so good I dug in before taking a picture, but it was beautiful! We will be back!!!

At first sight the place looks like a dungeon; however, don’t let the past diner style fool you. A Latino family run the diner, they are very welcoming and loving. Doña Rosa is behind the counter most times, but Bernie is running to attend tables. Enough of the additional, let’s get to the food. Portions are abundant & flavorsome. Prices are lower compared to most diners today. My husband, & I visited twice in one week, although we had to drive an hour away. We visited both early morning and last minute, food is made with the same effort. Attached is our receipt for 2x NY strip with eggs, hash browns with onion & cheese and side of toast; coffee is the best! Images show steak after we had eaten a lot of it.
The menu is very wide. Enjoy and visit soon. since this new family took over the business, a few community families renounced to supporting the business. Let’s support them!

This is a great little breakfast spot. We really enjoy eating here. The staff is always really friendly and the food is always hot and fresh!! It is cash only, which is somewhat annoying, but it is well worth it. The food is always delicious!!

Been a while since I’ve been here and it’s still as great as I can remember. Amazing prices and still has the classic diner feel. The staff works as a team and the food is so good. I don’t think I’ll ever go anywhere else for breakfast.

I used to eat here when I was in grade school over 15 years ago. I had always wanted to try coming back again as I had such great memories of eating here. I finally had a chance to come back so I brought my father and grandmother. It was the exact same as I had remembered! My family was blown away at how delicious the food was. Comparing it to more expensive breakfast places but at a much more reasonable price. The atmosphere was awsome! My grandmother loved how it had a old-school vibe of a diner from the 50’s. She really loved looking at all the old pictures on the walls. The skillet I ordered was SO good. The French toast was one of the best I have had. I use a wheelchair and they were happy to help accommodate me so that I could access the dining area. Its cash only. I would eat here every week if I lived closer. Overall awsome experience and just as amazing as I remembered. Bonus points that from what I can remember my waiter was pretty handsome lol.

Hands-down the best meal we had in Grayslake! This is quite the tiny diner serving up all the classics in top-notch form. Regulars abound but it wasn’t long before even us out-of-towners felt right at home. Our server was delightful – in the most harsh way. Everything we had was great and I’m not sure you could go wrong with a selection. If I lived here, I’d be eating at Fred’s all the time.

A COMMUNITY STAPLE!

We’ve been to Fred’s many times years ago but then we moved away. Now that we’ve moved back, we were hoping COVID-19 didn’t close them down. We are so grateful that it’s still there! Same great service from the same staff, same classic American menu, same feel-good/feels-like-home vibes.

There’s cool art pieces and pictures to commemorate local servicemen and women.

Things we’ve ordered and enjoyed: Eggs Benedict, Spanish Omelette, Corned Beef Hash, Steak & Eggs, pancakes, waffles, and all the classics.

Great family-owned business to support!
