Googled restaurants near the post office and this place popped up first- a no-frills, hole in the wall Haitian with limited reviews but very high ranking…. My wife got excited as she’s Dominican and loves chicharrones and has always wanted to try GRIOT ( the Haitian version of fried pork chunks). The photos and reviews looked good and so she popped in.

Owner was nice, she got the pork and it was made to order and my wife was not disappointed – the pork chunks were 95 % all meat – so very little fat- A+. Also full of flavor and so so moist and tender- she’s not used to that part when eating the meat of the chicharrones.

She thought the fried plantains needed a tad more salt but were perfectly fried and went great with the pickled slaw – well seasoned, tart and spicy – she was very happy.

She thought the meat was so good on its own that she didn’t need to add anything to it but the vinegaryness of the slaw was perfect (or a squeeze of lime but they had none to offer.).

Portion was a good size – she did eat it all but didn’t mean to lol. She’s looking forward to going back again soon for the same dish.

This is definitely a place to get take out or have a very quick meal inside since there is not much going on – a fridge for drinks, couple of tables
and an order counter.

A beer would have been great to have washed it all down but it didn’t look like they sold any- it’s really the only thing that would have made it a more perfect meal.

FYI-no photos from us but the ones on the other reviews are perfectly accurate of the griot(fried pork chunks). Also the other reviewers were definitely spot on- we were not led astray- great place for what it is! My wife hopes they are a clean operation since it looks a little run down- the only thing that was off putting about the experience… hopefully they are not on any of the SF dirty eating lists because it was delicious.

My wife and I have been coming here since they opened 15 years ago. I can honestly say there isn’t a better Haitian restaurant around! The restaurant is very unassuming, hidden away in the corner of a plaza. A few little tables and chairs and a counter… but that’s all they need. The food that comes from their kitchen is second to none. I can personally recommend the griot (fried pork chunks) and the tassot (fried turkey) with rice and peas and banana peze (Haitian tostones). Absolutely incredible!!! Also don’t forget the pikliz (very spicy pickled slaw)!! I’m not sure if they accept anything other than cash so come prepared, but luckily the prices haven’t changed in 15 years so you can easily leave with a big meal for 2 for under $40! If you love Haitian food, or if you’ve been hesitant to try it now is your chance to try the best.

I found it crazy that I never knew about this spot at all and I’m a regular in the area. I spoke to the owner and he said that they have been at the location for the last 14 years. People just don’t know about this place and people need to know. They have some of the best prices and good quality food. I will most definitely come back and try out the whole menu. The owner is from Port De Paix and he said that lots of locals come in. It’s small on the inside and is ideal for take out. They had a few small tables so I say down and ate my food there. I got Tassot Turkey Simp and chicken wings. The Tassot Turkey was so tender and flavorful. They even gave me extra pikliz without charging me extra. The chicken wings were just okay to me. The fried plantains were crispy and salted well. Pairs perfectly with the meat. While I sat and ate my food, there were lots of locals in and out. The locals call the woman at the counter Mama so that’s how I knew the food was gonna be good. I highly recommend this place for good and affordable Haitian food made with love.

BEST Haitian Food

Down in FL for work and since I am not in my own kitchen, I decided to try out as many Haitian restaurants as possible to find the one that tasted the most like « home ».

The first time I tasted the griot and banan peze from Fraternel’s, I couldn’t stop eating. The meat was fresh, clean, and seasoned so well every bite was a burst of flavor. The banan was fresh, fried to perfection, and perfectly salted. Ohhh and don’t get me started on the pikliz, I wanted a whole jar to take home. Flavourful, spicy, and just perfect. I always order an extra cup and a cup of sauce on the side too.

I went back, and decided to try Tassot (Turkey). When I first tasted it, I had to double check… did the accidentally give me the griot? NO the Tassot Turkey was heaven fried, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside… absolutely delicious.

Let me not forget the legume, soooo good and the meat tender and yummy.

I’ve been here a lot in the last 3 months and after trying out 9 different Haitian spots, this is where I will stay. Thank you for always taking care of me!

Delicious!

It was cash only when I ordered my food. I ordered the fried turkey and it came with plantains.

The flavor of the food was perfect. the portion was kind of small for a grio but if you get rice as a side and a drink you will still be full. The price is not bad. I paid $20 and it is CASH ONLY or you will have to go to the Publix across the street to do cash back or find an ATM. Overall I would definitely recommend.
