We booked our table in November, four months in advance, but when we arrived the restaurant had clearly overbooked. Our table for two was pushed up against another table for two, and there wasn’t even enough space to sit down without physically moving the whole table.

Because the restaurant had overbooked, staff seemed in a hurry to turn tables over quickly. In an already cramped space they even added an extra garden-style table to squeeze in more covers. Several other customers were also waiting a long time for tables they had booked.

Meanwhile, there was an entire dining room upstairs sitting empty. After at least forty minutes they eventually seated a family there, but only after repeatedly encouraging another couple to pay their bill. That couple had only been in the restaurant for about an hour and had planned to order a three-course meal. Their bill was brought to them without them asking for it, which felt quite awkward to witness.

The people we were seated next to were lovely, but the tables were so close together that it felt like we were all one table of six rather than three tables of two.

Food-wise, the sourdough, olives, salad and fries were nice. However, the pollock and ox cheeks were fairly underwhelming and nothing particularly memorable.

Overall, this restaurant could be great if it reduced the number of covers and the service was better organised. Unfortunately, we also left smelling strongly of fried food.

Service: ★★☆☆☆
Ambience: ★★☆☆☆
Food: ★★★☆☆ (mainly for the starters)

We were regular customers of Folkestone Wine Company, (previous restaurant to Franc) and it was one of our favourite restaurants at this price range so was excited to try Franc in Canterbury.

Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience for us.

Seating was cramped with the waitress having to speak over us to serve/take orders at the next table, main of pollock and side of fries/salad to share was just ok. Deserts were absolutely delicious!

We would have given this feedback when at the restaurant if asked and we know that it is not easy running a restaurant in this day and age but equally from a consumer point of view we deserve a great experience when spending our hard earned cash so hoping this feedback is taken on board in the way it is intended.

Having read the reviews, we booked Franc for a friend’s birthday and were really looking forward to the evening. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of expectations.

The booking was for 10, but three people became unwell at the last minute. As there is no phone number available to contact the restaurant, we emailed to advise. On arrival for the early 5:30pm service, the welcome felt quite cold, both in atmosphere and temperature. The table was set for 10 despite being quite small and really only suitable for around six. With the door to the back area frequently left open, cold air was coming through for much of the evening.

The menu was very limited, with a key item unavailable, and overall the food did not justify the price point or the reputation suggested by reviews. While the wine list looked extensive, not everyone in our group drank, so we can’t comment on that aspect.

Service was mixed. One of the younger waitresses was pleasant and attentive, but the owner’s manner came across as rude and unapproachable. This was particularly disappointing and left us feeling uncomfortable. When the bill arrived, being tapped on the shoulder to be told that service was not included felt unnecessary and poorly handled. There was also no farewell when we left.

Dining out is a treat, especially in the current climate, and for the cost, the overall experience and level of service were not acceptable. Others may have had better visits, but unfortunately ours was disappointing and not one we would repeat or recommend.

We had the pleasure of booking the restaurant for my 60th birthday celebrations. The menu choices were spot on and the food delicious. Ayten and Malcolm served us effortlessly, weaving between tables, always there on hand but quite unobtrusive. Thank you Dave and Polly and the rest of your fab team for making my birthday so memorable. We will see you again soon.

Service was attentive , food was well cooked but needed to come with a vegetable side at least, only option was to buy additional dish of chips or salad which wasn’t a particularly good pairing with either of the dishes we ordered. (Duck & trout in a sauce)
Very cramped, soul-less decor which was uninviting and cold. Our clothes needed washing afterwards due to the strong smell of cooking fat from the open kitchen.
Expensive. Wouldn’t go back.

Considering the rave reviews in the Guardian or wherever it was… I was very disappointed.
I had the Toulouse sausage and lentils. The sausage was ok, better than a supermarket sausage, not as good as my local farm shop. The lentils were just lentils. Sides? We shared chips and salad – the salad being authentically French i.e. – simply lettuce leaves with no dressing.
I saw nothing that demonstrated skill or passion in world of food and was disappointed with the food.
The company however was exceptional. It was a friends birthday and we managed to get a table for 16 so well done for hosting that.

Gorgeous 3-course meal, including a mouthwatering pork loin that I am still thinking about. Very well cared for by the lovely owners and staff. We will be back!

Two mains- both exceptional! Loved the wines too. We loved the whole experience- especially the open kitchen view and the wonderful service!

A very hearty and flavoursome mussel and saffron soup was a stand-out, and the chocolate marquise dessert was exquisite and decadent (no, really!) An absolute treat, and a most enjoyable repast.
